Over the next few weeks, ruby throated hummingbirds will be passing through Louisiana as they go south for the winter. If you haven't been maintaining your feeders, clean them thoroughly and fill them with fresh nectar.

For a homemade nectar use one-part white sugar to four parts water and bring that to a rolling boil. Once cooled, put it in your feeder and change it every 1-3 days to prevent spoilage. Never use brown sugar, artificial sweeteners or honey in a hummingbird feeder as it can harm the birds!

Thank you to the Westwego Rotary Club for inviting the Westwego Beautification Commission to your luncheon today. We are big fans Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and his efforts with Keep Louisiana Beautiful. Westwego has been the grant recipient of both the Beautification Grants and Trash Receptacle grants. Thank you!

Happy 4th of July! God Bless America!

Beginning in August, individuals who intentionally release balloons outdoors in Louisiana may face penalities under our anti-littering statutes.

Released balloons often end up as litter in our waterways, roads and communities, harming wildlife and creating unnecessary pollution. To celebrate milestones or honor loved ones, consider alternatives like blowing bubbles or flying colorful kites.

Today, Memorial Day, the Beautification Commission participated in the city’s annual observance by presenting a wreath. Due to weather, the observance was held at City Hall. We honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Thank you to Senator Patrick Connick who donated a Liberty Tree to be planted in Westwego to honor the 250th celebration of America. This live oak is planted in accordance with HR 351. The Westwego Beautification Commission is proud to participate in this program and appreciate the Westwego city employees who helped plant it.

Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers who helped “Make Westwego Shine”. These great people came out in iffy weather to pick up litter along Fourth Street this morning!
