While the foundation continues to award scholarships, this year the board started a new annual tradition, sponsored by the foundation. On Feb 21, 2020, the foundation hosted the inaugural Alumni Recognition Night. This event will have two categories:
• Westville Legend
• Foundation Legacy Recipient
ANTHONY J. “BURR” BRAZAS
~WESTVILLE LEGEND~
Anthony J. ‘Burr’ Brazas, a 1945 graduate of Westville High School, was known throughout Vermilion County and the state as a powerful athlete on the football field and other areas of athletic competition. He operated several businesses in the Westville community and was respected for his business acumen and his philanthropy. These accomplishments only scratch the surface of the character of the man and that was honed and developed through lessons taught to him from his family and his time at Westville High School. Burr Brazas, a name for many that has become synonymous with the great athletic history and tradition of Westville High School, was much more than a gifted athlete. His extraordinary work ethic, dedication to his family and his community, and his generosity and care for those in need established the standard for many to follow. He lived by the philosophy of “If you want to get it done, do it yourself”. Anthony ‘Burr’ Brazas is the epitome of what it means to be a Westville Tiger. Mr. Brazas, a true Westville legacy.
ABIGAIL (MILLER) RECKER
~FOUNDATION LEGACY RECEIPIENT~
Abigail Miller Recker, a 2007 graduate of WHS, attained a double major in political science and legal studies at Indiana State University. She then graduated from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and went on to become a Deputy Attorney General in Civil Appeal. In that position she represents state agencies and the State of Indiana in civil appellate matters in the Indiana Court of Appeals, Indiana Supreme Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Many of her cases are representing the Indiana Department of Child Services in termination of parental rights and child in need of services (CHINS) appeals. She especially enjoys helping children achieve permanency through adoption when a termination case is affirmed on appeal. Abigail currently resides with her husband and two daughters in Westfield, Indiana. We are certainly proud of Abigail’s accomplishments! She was one of the very first students to receive a financial scholarship through the Westville Community Academic Foundation. What a perfect choice!
