This Alumni Weekend, 1838 Black Metropolis invites you to experience a powerful recreation of the Institute for Colored Youth (ICY) graduation ceremony, held at the historic Mother Bethel AME Church.
At this recreated graduation, based on actual ICY graduation programs, actors step into the roles of ICY graduating students and professors. In front of a live audience, these students will undergo a rigorous public examination, just as students did in the 1860s.
Historical reenactors portraying figures such as F***y Jackson Coppin, Ebenezer Bassett, Octavius Catto, and Caroline LeCount will lead the ceremony, question students, and confer honors.
This play is directed, written, and narrated by Cheyney Alum Jann Ellis-Scruggs. It also features Cheyney Alum Marques Daughtry as Octavius V. Catto.
