Today was the ribbon-cutting for Aspetuck Land Trust ‘s 12,000 square-foot Miyawaki coastal micro forest at Seaside Park in Bridgeport planted last fall. The largest of its kind in the Northeastern United States it is planted with 6,000 trees shrubs and ground covers and was designed to address, flooding, urban heat, and biodiversity loss. The project was funded by the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the Connecticut Dept. of Agriculture (CTDOAG). We were honored to have both Commissioners of these statewide agencies, Katie D***s, and Bryan Hurlburt in attendance along with Joseph Gresko, Deputy Speaker of the House in the Connecticut General Assembly, Dr. Royce Avery Superintendent of the Bridgeport Public Schools City of Bridgeport, CT - Government, Jeanette Herron President of the Bridgeport City Council, and Luis Burgos Director of Public facilities, City of Bridgeport, who helped with locating this forest at Seaside Park. Thank you Mayor Ganim for your support.

This is the seventh forest we have planted in the City of Bridgeport and we hope to plant many more there and in Norwalk and Stamford. We are excited to bring the forest to the city and all the beauty and ecosystem services it provides. This is very important in our urban areas where the tree canopy is much lower than in surrounding suburban towns, and it is much hotter in the summer because of all the concrete and lack of trees. Today’s heat was a good example. The many people who attended were all huddled under an oak tree.

Last week as part of our Building Bridges program to connect people to nature we organized a fishing workshop for children in Bridgeport at Burnell Pond with students from Adam J. Lewis Academy.

Bass Pro Shop generously donated fishing rods so the students could not only learn how to fish, but also take their equipment home and continue building their skills. Trout Unlimited shared their knowledge of fishing, conservation, and proper techniques, creating an experience our students will never forget.

Seeing the students excited, engaged, and outdoors enjoying something new made the day truly special. Thank you to everyone that helped make it happen. Nature for all!

ALT’s popular Native Plant sale is today and tomorrow at the Caryl and Edna Haskins Preserve in Westport. If you don’t know about this, you should sign up for our E newsletter. You have to pre-order and then you are scheduled pick up times. The Haskins were scientists. They would have liked all these native plants and the biodiversity they provide! We want to thank the Haskins and their long time assistant Alice Dedorian all now deceased for thinking about future generations in donating this property to Aspetuck Land Trust. Watch a video about their lives on our website https://www.aspetucklandtrust.org/caryl-edna-haskins-preserve

People care. We just got a check from the Winston Foundation in New York City for our Building Bridges program in Bridgeport to connect people in Bridgeport to nature. The Community loves it too! Reggy St. Fortcolin (standing in the back, giving the peace sign) just finished leading a walking club initiative at Seaside Park with Bridgeport’s PT Partners and O & G. Nature belongs to us all.
