Come on out and explore this cool vernal pool at Copicut Woods with me on Sunday April 19. This is part 1 of a 3-part series where we can observe the changes in this dynamic ecosystem over a three-month period of time. We'll get up close, and maybe a little wet. Gotta love nature.

Join us on Wednesday, April 1, for Full Moon Hikes at our southeast locations! During these unique hiking experiences, we invite you to stay at World's End and Lyman Reserve after dark for a tranquil evening walk under the light of the moon.

At World’s End, a Trustees guide will lead participants on an hour-long hike along our century-old cart paths. We will take in views of the setting sun and rising moon as we share in informal discussion about the traditional significance of the month’s moon as well as World’s End history.

At Lyman Reserve, join us for a magical Full Moon Creatures of the Night Hike as we explore the fascinating world of these fascinating creatures. As we wander the trails, we’ll talk about the unique adaptations that allow nocturnal animals to thrive in the dark.

These hikes are great opportunities to get outside and share the joys of the outdoors.

Ready for some little brown bat fun facts?
🦇 A single little brown bat can consume up to 1,000 insects in an hour.
🦇 During their winter hibernation, their heartbeat drops to as low as 8 beats per minute. While flying in the summer, their heart rate can reach up to 1,300 beats per minute.
🦇 In order to save energy, little brown bats sleep about 20 hours a day on average.
🦇 They use echolocation to locate prey and avoid collisions. One bat can emit up to 20 calls per second while flying and up to 200 calls per second when closing in on prey.

Bats may be icons of Halloween and spooky season, but there’s nothing to fear—they’re fascinating creatures that play a vital role in our ecosystem. Learn more about little brown bats at mass.gov/info-details/species-spotlight-little-brown-bat

SAFETY NOTICE FOR DRIVERS: Brake for deer!
Almost half of all reported collisions between deer and vehicles happen from October to December. Deer are on the move this time of year during their breeding season, especially during the early morning and evening. While driving, you can avoid a collision by:
🔸 Observing signs for deer crossings
🔸 Slowing down to give yourself more time to react
🔸 Reducing distractions

Do not swerve to avoid hitting a deer as it may lead to more risk and damage than hitting the deer. Vehicle collisions with moose or deer should be reported to the Massachusetts Environmental Police at 1-800-632-8075.
