đł Beech Leaf Disease: What Westport Residents Should Know
Beech trees are an important part of Westportâs forests, neighborhoods, and natural landscape. Beech Leaf Disease (BLD) continues to affect beech trees throughout Connecticut, so the Westport Conservation Department wants residents to know what to look for and what steps they can take.
đ Watch for:
⢠Dark bands or stripes between leaf veins
⢠Crinkled or distorted leaves
⢠Premature leaf drop
⢠Thinning canopies and declining branches
đż What can you do?
⢠Check your beech trees each year.
⢠Photograph and monitor unusual symptoms.
⢠Avoid moving beech firewood, branches, or plant material.
⢠Consider professional advice for high-value or declining trees.
⢠Maintain a diverse mix of tree species in your landscape.
There is currently no single treatment that works for every tree. Management is focused on protecting selected high-value trees, monitoring tree health and safety, and maintaining a diverse, resilient tree canopy.
This information is based on guidance from the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) and Connecticut DEEP.
