What a true piece of history!

This 1918 photo, labeled “Duncan Walker, Ubly, Mich., tile draining,” shows a crew with horses and a steam-powered ditching machine laying clay drain tile in a farm field.

Tile drainage was a big deal in the late 1800s and early 1900s, helping turn wet ground into workable farmland. Engineers designed traction ditchers to cut a graded trench so tile could be set below the surface and carry water away.

The “Duncan Walker” name on the print suggests the operator or owner of the rig, but the men and exact farm location aren’t identified here.

Do you recognize this machine, the Walker name, or where this might have been taken near Ubly?
