Our First People – The Abenaki

The Historical Society of Windham County will be hosting a special program exploring the long history of the Abenaki people in our region. Professor Robert Goodby of Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire will share some of the extensive knowledge he has gained in leading a number of archaeological explorations with his students in this homeland of our first residents.

One of those digs, near Keene, produced charcoal which could be carbon-dated to nearly 13,000 years ago, a time when the glacial ice sheets were still retreating. That site is among the earliest confirmed native occupancies known in the entire eastern United States.

This program will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, in Williamsville Hall. Admission is free, with donations much appreciated.

Thanks to Douglas Burton for sharing family pictures. Left is Amos N. Burton, born 1785 and died 1874, buried in Forefathers Cemetery. Famously, known as "Square" (Squire) Burton in those days, during the Civil War he would announce Union Victories with the raising the family flag, made by his daughter Nancy [we still have the flag in our collection] - he was one of the few citizens of Weston who got a Boston paper via the post. The oval framed portrait was photographed on the lawn of the Bailey House, just down the road from the Burton Farm on Burton Road. Right photos are of the Burton extended family taken at the Burton Farm at a reunion of Amos' grandchildren in 1935 and then in 1957 (?). Very happy to have these in our digital collection.

From Raymond Taylor Album #3 - some more Taylor Family Treasures. Oella (Hannum) Taylor, wife of Duane Taylor. She was born 1853 in Weston, and died in Keene in 1932. Mother of Lucy, Mabel, Nettie and Esther...from the last post. Her marriage to Duane Taylor merged the Taylors with the Spaulding, Hannum and Shattock families. Duane Taylor's siblings would further imbed the Taylors with the Pease, Waite and Bolsters of Weston. I'm sure this stimulated Raymond Taylor's interest in Genealogy.

Raymond Taylor Album #3 again, a family album, at least in part. The picture on the right shows three of four Taylor sisters, Lucy, Nettie and Mabel - not shown is Esther, who might not have been born yet (1893). Children of Duane and Oella (Hannum) Taylor. All born in Weston. Mabel appears to have lived the longest (1961). On the left is Nettie and an unnamed young lady (I can't tell if one of the other sisters). I must admit I thought the name Nettie unusual but there are 47 instances of the name in various families in our town Genealogy (Wilder, Taft, Sweetland, Bennett (Myron Piper's second wife), Piper, Pease, Mansur, Kirk, Johnson, Forbes, Jelley, Heald (or Hale), Cone (Nettie Cone married George H. Coburn), Butterfield (one of the twins Nellie and Nettie)....). Recognize any of those names? It took an hour to figure out two pictures and three people - time well spent and there's obviously more to the story.

From the Raymond Taylor Album #3: Simeon D. (Dow) Spaulding shown here, born in Weston in 1816, if I can follow the genealogy, the son of Simeon Spaulding and Hannah Dow, originally from Hollis, NH. Simeon D.'s sister, Lucy Maria, married James Madison Taylor. Simeon D. was married three times. Simeon D. and his wives are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery - he died in 1907, while Simeon the elder, and several other Spauldings are buried in the Forefathers Cemetery off Lawrence Hill Road. I think I got most of that right.

From the Raymond Taylor Albums - Some PEOPLE for a change. This is James G. Spaulding, born 1822 in Weston, died 1913 and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Weston. One of many Spauldings in Plymouth, Cavendish, Ludlow and Weston in the early days. Don't know a lot about Mr. Spaulding, but he was important to Raymond Taylor...maybe someone out there can tell us a little more.

Scenes of Weston from our Raymond Taylor Collection - Album #1. The top picture is noted as "School Street 'The Common' looking East and the bottom is "Playhouse and Community House" [before the fire of 1963]. The cars would seem to make this picture 1940s-50s?
