It is with profound sadness that MADD South Florida shares the passing of Diane Holmes, founder of the Miami Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in 1983.
After the tragic loss of her son, Shawn Holmes, in 1981 to a driver who fled the scene, Diane turned her grief into action. Determined to prevent other families from experiencing the same heartbreak, she founded the Miami Chapter of MADD and became a tireless advocate for victims and survivors.
At a time when MADD was entirely volunteer-driven, Diane dedicated countless hours to supporting families, raising awareness, speaking at Victim Impact Panels, organizing Candlelight Vigils, observing sobriety checkpoints, and advocating for change. Her compassion and commitment touched countless lives throughout South Florida.
Diane's efforts helped advance MADD's mission and contributed to meaningful progress in victim support, education, legislation, and the fight to end impaired driving.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Diane's family and loved ones. While she will be deeply missed, her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the countless families she inspired and supported.
