We cannot have a proper view of God when we distort women's place in Scripture.

We distort the passage when we:
🫢 Ignore women by failing to mention them
🎥 Cameo women by tearing them from their context
🫵 Vilify women by seeing them only through a lens of sin or immorality

Women are complex characters in the text. We need to pay attention to their particular place in a story line.

Is her suffering her own fault, or the result of terrible circumstances?

Many think she initiated five divorces and her current relationship was adulterous... but that's highly unlikely in a time when women had very little societal and legal freedoms to leave a marriage.

It's more likely that she lost five husbands and her next relationship was a levirate relationship—a custom where a man marries his deceased brother's widow.
