Maryland Fund For Horses "Doing the right thing for Maryland's equines"

02/26/2024

IT'S OUR 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY!
Please keep reading and help us keep helping Maryland horses!

Ten years ago, Maryland Fund For Horses (MFFH) was founded with the goal of keeping beloved horses safe and healthy in their homes when when short-term crises affected their owners' ability to care for them. The underlying reason was to keep horses safely out of the auction-to-slaughter pipeline.

Since then, we've been helping horse owners and their horses -- from Southern Maryland to the farthest edge of Western Maryland and everywhere in between. From providing tons of hay and feed, routine castrations, life-saving hospital care, the "final act of kindness," organizing three large adoption events, and more.
All of it done with a small board of directors, one paid staff member, volunteers and OUR WONDERFUL DONORS!

If you love horses, own horses and are grateful that a "safety net" like MFFH exists, please visit our website and click the Donate button to help us continue - and expand- our work to help and protect Maryland's horses!

Today is World Kindness Day - be kind to your horse(s) and your other animals, be kind to your trainer, your vet, your farrier, and be kind to those you see at the barn - especially barn staff. Kindess can brighten your day in ways you might not imagine, and will lift up those around you too. Find something to smile about and be kind today - it's contagious!

It's Giving Tuesday! Maryland Fund For Horses relies on our "givers" so horses in Maryland have a "safety net" when times are tough for their owners. MFFH provides temporary feed, hay
and all types of veterinary support -- along with expert and compassionate advice, so horses can safely remain with their owners, stay safe and healthy, or receive a final act of kindness.

Winter is a busy time for MFFH, so your one-time or recurring gift is especially important. THANK YOU!

It's GELDING season at Maryland Fund For Horses!
We believe if a c**t or stallion is not intended for breeding, gelding him can improve his chance to stay out of the auction/slaughter pipeline later in life. Gelding (castration) usually costs $250-plus.
WANT TO HELP? DONATE & SHARE: bit.ly/HelpMDHorses
When 5 people donate $50, a c**t/stallion can become a gelding! NEED HELP WITH GELDING COSTS? If you (or someone you know) need to geld a Maryland horse, click here: bit.ly/geld-my-c**t

Happy New Year, Friends! Most of you probably noticed our recent fundraising for cryptorchid surgeries -- last month was the first time MFFH was able to fund two such surgeries in the same month.
Both surgeries were successful; the horses are back at home and recovering well.

Our mission is: Do The Right Thing for Maryland's Equines In Need, THANK YOU to all of you who helped us do just that!

You can learn more about this condition that affects 3-4% of male horses here: https://thehorse.com/196812/cryptorchidism-in-horses-2/ Often, a new owner won't realize they have a cryptorchid horse unless they request a veterinary exam with a specific blood test prior to taking ownership. It's usually later when the horse exhibits stallion-like behavior that the problem has a diagnosis - along with an estimate for surgery costing $1,000 - $5,000 or more.

Intact males with hidden te**es can present owners with increased costs and dilemmas.

Blackie's surgery fund update: WE DID IT!! Actually, YOU did it -- all of you who helped raise all the funds for little Blackie's surgery. Here's a high-five for everyone who donated so this charming little guy can have a shot at a healthy, happy future. He is living at his new home, and his surgery is scheduled for early next month.
Again, THANK YOU for supporting Blackie and Maryland Fund For Horses as we continue to follow our mission - Doing The Right Thing for Maryland's Horses.
Happy Holidays to one and all!
