The National Weather Service has confirmed that a meteor was responsible for the loud explosion heard across the Cleveland area today.

The boom was caused by a meteor entering the atmosphere — not a cause for alarm. The satellite image above, captured by NWS Cleveland, shows the event over our region.

High winds on Friday, March 13th caused widespread damage in the Westshore area to trees and electric lines which can be illustrated in the screenshots here. WFD C-Shift responded to 36 incidents during their tour of duty ranging from EMS calls, downed trees and power lines, small fires in or smoking and arcing electrical equipment.

Our members work closely with Westcom Fire Dispatch, who skillfully answered and dispatched well over 100 incidents in the same timeframe for us and several area departments. The WPD, Westlake Service Department, and the Illuminating Company (including members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) are also instrumental in getting hazards reported, marked, rendered safe, and controlling traffic flow to protect the public until final repairs can be made.

Our friends at the PD and Westcom do not have any additional information, so please leave their phone lines open by instead going directly to First Energy’s website. Remember to stay far away (no less than 30’) from any downed wires ⚡️

108 years 💪🏻

Since February 28, 1918, the IAFF has led the way for improved fire fighter safety, increased wages, and better benefits. For 108 years, our International Union has given a voice to fire fighters. We have accomplished so much but we are not done. We will continue to from Washington DC and Ottawa to city and town halls across the US and Canada.

Good afternoon,

West Life News reported on the ongoing impasse in contract negotiations between our association and the City of Westlake. The article mentions that a recent fact finding report was rejected by our members and Westlake City Council, and goes on to say:

“Firefighters, who are allowed to strike under Ohio law once a contract has expired, may also file a 10-day notice of intent to strike if no agreement is reached.”

Firefighters and other essential public safety personnel are prohibited from striking. Furthermore, our dedicated members would never elect to leave the community unprotected. One of the tenets of our position throughout this process has been to vigorously fight for MORE protection for citizens and ourselves.

Local 1814 members have continued to faithfully, honorably, and professionally serve the community throughout this ongoing contract negotiation which began early 2025. Rest assured that we will continue to do so.

We were pleased to see two new Firefighter-Paramedics welcomed into the ranks of the WFD this morning. Joseph Reich and Robert Schneider were sworn in today and will fill two of three vacancies on the department’s roster.
