Together on the Journey

Together on the Journey Together On The Journey (TRJ): Building Community and Empowering Families in Transracial Adoption

Our Vision
We envision a world where no transracially adopted person has to choose between parts of who they are—a world where race and adoption are not isolating experiences, but pathways to confidence, cultural pride, and authentic connection.

TRJ is creating a future where:
*Children grow up knowing they belong.

*Parents are equipped to parent across race with humility and understandin

g.

*Lifelong friendships and mentorships form, building an intergenerational network of support.

*Children see their hair, skin, and full selves as sources of pride, beauty, and power.

*Transracially adopted persons are valued as leaders, experts, and change-makers in their own narratives.

Our Mission
Through camp, community, and education, we equip families with the tools to navigate the complexities of adoption, race, and identity. We empower parents to challenge old paradigms, embrace lifelong growth, and show up for their children in deeper, more meaningful ways—so that no child feels alone in their experience. Above all, we ensure that transracially adopted children are fully seen, heard, and celebrated for exactly who they are.

A Future of Growth and Sustainability
We dream of a future where TRJ is not just an annual camp but a year-round resource for families, with regional gatherings, ongoing mentorship, and expanded programming. We are committed to securing sustainable funding so that financial barriers never prevent families from accessing our support. With the right resources, we can ensure TRJ remains a place of refuge, learning, and joy for generations to come.

TRJ is more than a camp—it is a commitment to walking together on the journey of transracial adoption. We invite you to join us in building a world where every transracially adopted child feels deeply known, loved, and celebrated.

Together, we connect.
Together, we grow.
Together, we thrive.

The Heart of Connection means making room for the whole story—including culture, history, difference, and joy. It is an honest, active practice that ensures no one part of a family’s identity has to disappear for the other to exist.

Try this with your family this week:
• Talk about it: Ask each other, "What is one thing you love about yourself?" or "Who was the first person you loved?".
• Practice it: Create a Family Love Playlist with songs that make you feel brave, connected, or calm.
• Celebrate it: Honor Black Excellence, Joy, and Resilience by reading a new story or trying a new recipe together,.

February Mantra: “Love grows here—and it makes space for every part of who we are.”

❤️ Connection isn’t just a feeling—it’s a practice.
In our upcoming year-long family program session, we’re diving deep into a theme that gets to the core of every healthy relationship: Love That Tells the Truth.

It’s easy to be kind, but it takes courage to be honest. Genuine connection happens when we move past the surface and lead with authenticity. Join us as we explore how to balance unwavering support with the "truth-telling" our families need to thrive.

Love Is Protection.

When the world brings constant, unabashed, very specific and harmful racism to Black and Brown people and it goes unchecked and unacknowledged, it can permanently impact transracially adopted children and young people.

This is why, in transracial adoption, love has to go beyond intention and affection.
Love has to fiercely protect.

Protect children from racism that can be macro from politicians and micro from family.
Protect them in schools where they are often misunderstood or unseen.
Protect their bodies, their minds, their spirits, and their sense of belonging.
Protect them by believing them when they name harm.
Protect them by showing up—consistently and courageously in systems and in communities.

This February, as Black History Month and Valentine’s Day intersect, we’re inviting families to move deeper into a love that acts.

Black History Month is a reminder that Black history is history. 🌍❤️

This month, let's focus on intentionality—supporting Black-owned businesses, reading stories from Black authors, and amplifying voices that need to be heard.

Drop a comment with a Black creator, business, or leader who inspires you! 👇🏾✨

For transracial adoptees, the "silence" of parents regarding race isn't a neutral act; it is often felt as a failure to protect. To be a "friend" in MLK's sense, a parent must be an active, vocal participant in their child’s racial journey.
