Kicked off our Summer ACTS OF KINDNESS for our 50th Anniversary by learning some ASL at our Eastside Swim & Games program. Being able to communicate with all our YC friends is important. It’s never too late to learn another language no matter how young or old you are. Keep spreading kindness everyone!

In honor of our summer season kicking off and fun in the sun in full swing, we’re featuring two alumni today who were amazing assets to our Sports & Swim program (and so much more): JALEN SANDVICK and KERRY MADDEN!

Jalen first came to YC in 2015 and at the mere age of 10 quickly became one of the shining stars at Clague Park, pushing himself and his team to do their absolute best each and every week. Jalen was an outstanding athlete with incredible sportsmanship and an effective leader and encourager to his teammates and fellow competitors. He was also very creative, taking part in our hip hop programs, Holiday Show, and other arts activities. Jalen was a great friend to everyone and someone who truly made an impact on the participants and volunteers around him!
Today, Jalen is finishing up at program at the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center for graphic design and works in an office as a receptionist, no doubt still motivating those lucky enough to be around him.

Kerry first joined our volunteer team in 2019 and helped at countless sports, arts and party programs, giving her over 330 hours of service. Despite Covid hitting during her earlier volunteer years, Kerry continued to support our participants and mission every way she could, from virtual programs and car parades to small, in-person programs. As time went on, Kerry grew from a shy and quiet helper to an exceptional leader during her time at YC and it was great to witness the friendships she built and the lives she touched through her selflessness and heart.
In the fall, Kerry will be entering her junior year at Ohio University where she’s studying to become an Intervention Specialist. When she’s not in school, she’s a counselor for individuals with disabilities at Camp Christopher and an intern at Rising Heights, Inc.

Thank you, Kerry and Jalen, for being so WOO-ONDERFUL and for all you both have done for YC!!!

Today, we would like to thank one of our Where Will Color Take You? 5k and 1-Mile Walk & Roll COLOR sponsors, The Hardman Family!

In the 1980s, Dave Hardman, President of the Board of Trustees, had the vision to support Youth Challenge through an annual Race Day. Dave's son Doug served on the Board in the early 2000s, and his grandson Dan serves on the Board today. The family has made it a long-standing tradition to attend this annual event together. We are so grateful to the Hardman Family for their support spanning more than three decades.

Thank you, Hardman Family, for helping support generations of young people with physical disabilities and teen volunteers!

This week’s Alumni Spotlight shines bright on two former YC stars! Let’s hear it for FAITH LAPORTA and ABI DUMM!

Both Abi and Faith were at YC around the same time and performed together both on stage and on the field. They were partners for many Sports & Swim programs, competed in the Crosstown Showdown together, and shared their talents on stage in several Holiday Shows. They both brought such love and light to the whole YC Crew and we’re all changed for the better having known them.

Faith started at YC in 2017 and came to a wide variety of programs as both an athlete and an artist. She was always so much fun to be around and had so much enthusiasm for everything she was doing, making her a great partner for her volunteer and an amazing example for her fellow participants. Faith is currently working on getting her degree in elementary education at Baldwin Wallace University and we know she’ll make an amazing teacher someday soon!

Abi started at YC in 2018 and gave over 500 volunteer hours during her time with us. She was a regular at goalball and YELP and served as an officer on the Volunteer Committee. She was a great friend to so many participants and showed everyone such encouragement and love. Abi is currently working on her doctorate in occupational therapy and does projects on wheelchairs in her research lab. She also runs a service organization that makes screen-reader accessible menus. Outside of school, she enjoys writing, cooking, and trying to keep her houseplants alive!

It’s great to see both of these young women working toward careers that will empower others toward independence and we know that their time at YC helped pave the way. We can’t wait to see where the end up! Thanks, Abi and Faith, for being so VANTASTIC!

Our random Acts of Kindness crew have been busy spreading support. The YC team rolled around Laurel School putting sticky notes of affirmation on lockers. Then, at the St. Mary’s Sweaty Yeti Race in Berea, the kindness continues as the gang made & waved signs for runners to keep them motivated to reach the finish line.
