Bridge to Mobility

Our mission is to increase accessibility to wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Join us in our mission to Accelerate Accessibility.

Bridge to Mobility is the national non-profit organization dedicated solely to increasing accessibility to wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAV). We have mobilized the WAV industry, including leaders, manufacturers, dealers, suppliers, and employees, in this mission to promote and support the mobility access needs of persons with disabilities for adaptive vehicles and related equipment. As a collab

orative, industry-wide initiative, we have an opportunity to make an incredible impact and directly change the lives of so many individuals with a disability in the United States—bridging the gap to mobility and allowing them to fully enjoy their lives with freedom.

Meet Mohammad and his daughter, Afya. Afya is a 13-year old wheelchair user. Mohammad has been carrying Afya in and out of their vehicle, but as they both get older, that becomes increasingly difficult. This wheelchair accessible vehicle with ensure that Afya gets to her appointments, school, and family outings safely. The first places she'd like to go are restaurants and the movies!

Meet Jim and his wife, Linda. Jim is a double amputee due to complications from diabetes. While their sons have been transferring Jim into one of their cars for medical appointments and rehabilitation sessions, they wanted a WAV to make the process safer for everyone, as well as give them the freedom to enjoy family outings together. Happy to have worked with on this award and hope the family has been able to enjoy their new found freedom as well security and stability with their new wheelchair accessible vehicle!

Meet Carson and his mom, Jessica. Carson was in a motor vehicle accident and sustained a traumatic brain injury. His family quickly encountered significant gaps between what was medically necessary and what was financial covered. This vehicle will safely transport him to and from medical appointments and therapy sessions, as well as school and community activities.

Meet Mary and her husband, Richard. Mary's power chair is very difficult to transport, and when they've needed to use medical transport in an emergency, the cost is very high. This wheelchair accessible vehicle will provide them the ability to safely transport Mary and her wheelchair.

August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy awareness month. Although mobility depends heavily on the specific SMA type, in total, well over 70-80% of all diagnosed MSA patients require wheelchair assistance at some point in their lives. And with a wheelchair, comes a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

The month focuses on educating the public about the genetic neuromuscular disease, raising research funds, and supporting patients living with gradual muscle weakness.

Meet Contissa and Mariah. Contissa's daily use vehicle (that was not wheelchair accessible) was totaled by a new teen driver. Since she needed to replace her vehicle, she decided to look at wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs). They worked with Mobility Works and were so excited to get their new vehicle. Contissa said the first places they were going was to grandmums and the mall! Mariah loves the mall!

Today is ADA Day! This day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act - the landmark civil rights legislation turns 36 years old this year. The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

Meet Raheli. She needed a wheelchair accessible vehicle for one of her children who has cerebral palsy. She worked with the Dallas MobilityWorks team and was able to get a WAV once she received the Bridge to Mobility award. And...she's in love with her new van!

Meet Mark and Joshua, and Joshua's siblings. Joshua has complex medical needs, including quadriparetic cerebral palsy, This vehicle will allow his Dad, Mark, to get him to medical and therapy appointments and emergency care visits safely and reliably. Mark worked with one of our partners, United Access - Houston, and we were happy to bridge the gap between what was affordable and what was not.

Meet Marielle, Barbara and Iggy. Barbara is Marielle's mom and has Multiple Sclerosis. They worked with MobilityWorks to get a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) that will allow Barbara to regularly attend MS support group meetings, see friends, reliably get to medical appointments, and go out to a weekly dinner with Marielle. And they named the WAV Iggy!
