Spring is well underway, the kids are restless, and Crawford County is ready. Whether you're planning a day trip or a whole weekend, there's a lot to work with, and some of the best stuff is either open right now or just around the corner.
Here's what to put on the family calendar:
🐟 Linesville Spillway at Pymatuning State Park — Linesville (Free and open year-round! This is one of those experiences kids genuinely never forget. Watch thousands of carp swarm the surface so thick that ducks literally walk across their backs. Bring bread and prepare for chaos in the best possible way.)
🛢️ Drake Well Museum and Park — Titusville (Open Wednesday through Sunday—indoor and outdoor exhibits, operating oil field machinery, a working replica of the world's first commercial oil well, hiking and biking trails, and a picnic pavilion. History doesn't get more hands-on than this.)
🎨 The Kilted Kiln — Meadville (Open Wednesday through Sunday — pick a piece, paint it your way, and take home something you actually made. Kids love it. No experience needed. Studio fees are $4 for kids and $6 for adults—flat rate, not per hour.)
🌿 Ernst Trail — Meadville (Over 5 miles of flat, paved trail through the French Creek Valley—perfect for a family bike ride, a walk with a stroller, or just getting some fresh air without anyone complaining it's too hard.)
🖼️ French Creek Arts Collective — Meadville (A cooperative arts studio and gallery at Cussewago Square offering workshops, open studio time, rotating exhibitions, and community events. They offer programming for all ages—including younger kids and child-parent workshops—making it a great stop for creative families. Check their events calendar for upcoming classes and hands-on workshops.)
And coming up soon — worth putting on the calendar now:
🦌 Pymatuning Deer Park — Jamestown (Opens weekends in May, then daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day. A family-owned animal park since 1953! Hand-feed deer and exotic animals, ride the miniature train, enjoy the pony rides and Budgie Barn. Free parking.)
🚂 Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad — Titusville (The regular excursion season opens in June, but the railroad runs special themed trips throughout the year, so there may already be something worth booking before then. Kids ride for $14 on regular runs, and the nation's only working railway post office is on board. Check the schedule and buy tickets early—popular rides sell out.)
Crawford County has a lot going on for families this spring. Start planning now and make a weekend of it.
