❓Did you know that Stony Brook PTO has funded thousands of dollars of mini grants over the last few years?

💰Mini Grants are requests for funding from the PTO for items that are not provided by the school budget that enhance student learning and benefit the Stony Brook students. Any Stony Brook teacher, administrator, or staff member can submit an application.

💸 Last year a few of the items funded were:

💃🏽 8th Grade Spanish- Students were able to take a Zumba class in Spanish to promote language learning and cultural appreciation. It also benefited students' physical, mental well-being, and social connections.

📖 6th grade ELA-- 25 copies of Mazy Chen's "Last Chance" were purchased to have a class set so each student will have a copy to read as a class. This book is about a Chinese American girl who goes to live with her grandparents in Last Chance, Minnesota so that her mom can care for her dying father. During the time she is there, she experiences racism and finds a way to address it in a meaningful way.

🥅 Roller Hockey Club- New hockey nets were purchased for the Club which is offered in the fall and the spring and has become a popular club activity at SB Middle School.

📖 8th grade Civics-18 copies of They Called Us Enemy by George Takei were purchased to complete a class set so all 8th graders can be reading the book together in class. This book is about his personal experience as a child being sent with his family to internment camps during World War 2 because of their Japanese heritage.

🧮 Fantasy Club- New games were purchased to support the after school club. These games appeal to students across all spectrums, and can be played by students of any ability, which gives the students a chance to connect with peers and find success in a fun low stress environment.

⭕️ Library- Button Maker In terms of curriculum, the button maker is used for Civics to create campaign buttons and for the Action Civics project. With the button maker in the library, it may also be used for other grades and projects.
