North Stokes Athletic Director Scott Smith announced that the newly redone track that surrounds the football field will be named after former teacher and coach, Bill Hart. The Bill Hart Track Field at Lyons Stadium will be presented at North Stokes home football game on Friday against Chatham Central during halftime.
“There is no one more deserving of this than Coach Hart,” praised Smith. “He is probably upset that we are recognizing him, but he has represented North Stokes and this community well over the years. His generosity towards our programs has been unmatched by anyone and we want to show a small token of our appreciation to him.”
North Stokes published its’ 50th Anniversary book a few years ago and three of his colleagues described him best.
“No one comes close to him when it comes to support for North Stokes — not even close,” said original faculty, guidance counselor, coach, and friend Julian McKenzie. “He is uniquely universally liked as a student at North Stokes, as a soldier, as a state park worker, and as a coach.”
“You can use many different superlatives to describe Coach Hart and I don’t think it would do him justice,” said Mark Love — Class of 1978. “He has been a friend, mentor, teacher, and confidant to many of us that have been lucky enough to work beside him. His passion for helping young student-athletes is an inspiration to all of us. We could only wish to touch as many lives as Coach Hart.”
“Bill Hart has been one of the most influential men in my life,” said coach Rodney King. “Throughout the past 20 years that I have know him, Coach Hart taught me honor, responsibility, and a hard work ethic. Coach Hart inspired me to be a teacher and a coach, and I try to model my teaching and coaching philosophy after his.”
