Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival and Westfield State University present:

East Jerusalem, West Jerusalem
Monday, March 19, 7:00PM
Dever Stage, Parenzo Hall, Westfield State University, Westfield

Often dubbed an Israeli Bruce Springsteen, singer-songwriter David Broza makes it his mission to promote peace through his soul-stirring vocal and guitar work, and fusion of musical influences. Over just eight days, in the studio of Sabreen, the legendary Palestinian band, Israeli and Palestinian music collaborators jam together in harmonious creation, joined by Grammy-winning artist-producer Steve Earle. As the artists share deep conversation and surprising personal truths, the music breaks through the cynicism and fear, and coexistence becomes palpable.

Introduction by Fr. Warren Savage, Director, Interfaith Center, Westfield State University. Panel discussion to follow the film screening.

Free for WSU students. Open to the community: $10 adults, $8 seniors (65+). Co-sponsored by the Albert and Amelia Ferst Interfaith Center and The Global Women's History Project.

Trailer and more info at pvjff.org.

From the Campus Ministry Bulletin on March 4, 2018:
Pastoral Reflection
It is disrespectful to curse and swear at others using the name of God. The habit of cursing and swearing dishonors our relationship with God and shows a lack of care and concern for the Creator. But this commandment is not just about cursing and swearing; it is concerned with the ways in which we use God’s name to justify things that are contrary to ways of God.
Some people misuse God’s name to justify killing others. Some people misuse God’s name to manipulate and oppress others. Some people misuse God’s name and blame God for natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods. Some people misuse God’s name to enforce unjust laws and inflict punishment on others. Some people misuse God’s name to keep people in bo***ge.
Our relationship with God must reflect the God of the Covenant who promised to be faithful to the people, to show love and compassion in times of need, and to be merciful and forgiving. As partners of God’s Covenant, we, too, promise to be like God in the world: faithful, loving, compassionate, merciful, and forgiving toward all people. When we speak and behave negatively toward others, we not only misuse the name of God, we also misuse the power and wisdom of God.
Ponder: When do I misuse the name of God?
Prayer: Lord, you instill within me your power and wisdom. Help me to discern more clearly how to use your power and wisdom in service of my brothers and sisters.
Practice: I will pray for discernment; I will fast from misusing God’s name; I will speak about God in a respectful, reverent manner.
