Today is the first day of Summer Camp 2026! The staff are here, trained, and eager to meet our first batch of campers!
And with this moment comes an opportunity to share with the staff what this summer could mean for them, for the campers, and for this place. I'm never really at a loss for words, but some great words arrived by mail yesterday that made my life a lot easier.
Back in April, two friends visited Pine Lake. They hadn't been here in a long time, so they were eager to hike and explore, just like they did when they were kids. Unfortunately, their day kind of took a turn when they lost their car keys, a storm rolled in, and the sun went down.
As we would always do at Pine Lake, we offered them a place to rest in the nature center and helped them connect with family to get a ride home. It was truly just a normal day for me, but it was much appreciated by these friends.
Yesterday, this amazing fish-collaged envelope showed up at camp from San Francisco, CA. Inside was a handcrafted card from a tree field guide, some very cool nature art, and the words I shared with staff today, that I share with all of you as well:
"Ever since I was a kid, Pine Lake has been my most special place and the fact that it remains unspoiled and simple is a testament to the long line of people who have stewarded it over the years. Even as it got dark and I could tell it would start raining (and before we knew the lodge was open) I never felt afraid. I was at Pine Lake and even if I had to lie down for the night in a bed of leaves, I felt surrounded by safety and happiness."
As another summer arrives, may we continue to be the stewards of this place that ensure all people share in community, creation, and God's love. Keep us safe, let us laugh deeply, sing loudly, and be fully present with each other and with our Creator. Amen.
