Chain of survival in action: A Record-Breaking Stroke Response!
Happy EMS Week and Stroke Awareness Month!
When a medical emergency strikes, every second matters.
Today, we are incredibly proud to highlight an extraordinary example of what happens when a fire-based EMS system works in perfect sync with our community partners at Baystate Noble Hospital and Baystate Medical Center.
While today we are highlighting one specific call, this represents just one of many lifesaving incidents handled every single day, all year round, by the dedicated men and women of the Westfield Fire Department.
🕒 The Timeline: October 2025
*When a local family noticed sudden signs of a stroke in their loved one, they immediately called 9-1-1.
What followed was a masterclass in teamwork, speed, and clinical excellence:
*9-1-1 Dispatch & Arrival: Westfield Regional Dispatch processed the call instantly. WFD EMS crews arrived at the patient's side in just 6 minutes.
*On-Scene & Transport: Crews rapidly identified the stroke symptoms, packaged the patient, and began transport within 10 minutes, calling in a "Stroke Alert" en route to prep the hospital.
*Baystate Noble ED & Imaging: Upon arrival, the patient went straight to CT. The scan was started in 6 minutes and read in 14 minutes.
*Record-Breaking Medication Delivery: After a Tele-Neurologist confirmed the occlusion, the ED team administered the clot-busting medication Tenecteplase (TNK) in a record 21 minutes (shattering the 45-minute national benchmark!).
*The "Code Stroke" Transfer: Utilizing efficient interfacility protocols, Westfield Fire provided rapid secondary transport to the Interventional Radiology lab at Baystate Medical Center. The entire Door-in-Door-out (DiDo) time at Noble was an exceptional 32 minutes.
*The First Pass: Within 19 minutes of rolling into BMC, specialists achieved "first pass" in the Cath lab (far exceeding the 60-minute goal).
The Ultimate Goal: An NIH Score of 0
After a dedicated road of recovery and acute rehabilitation, the patient returned home to their family with an NIH Stroke Scale score of 0—meaning no remaining neurological deficits from the stroke. This is the definition of a best-case scenario, made possible because every single link in the chain of survival held strong.
