Our hearts are deeply heavy as we mourn the passing of Willie Dawsey a phenomenal father of four, a devoted husband, a relentless worker, a passionate football coach, and a true leader in our community.

Willie touched lives everywhere he went. Whether it was pouring into young athletes on the field, volunteering and cheering on his daughters at track meets, supporting his family with unmatched commitment, or showing up for others with his quiet strength and unwavering character, he led by example. His impact will live on through every life he lifted, every lesson he taught, and every moment of love he gave to his family and others.

To the Dawsey family, you are surrounded by an entire community that loved Willie and stands with you during this unimaginable time. We pray for comfort, healing, and strength in the days ahead.

Rest in peace, Coach Dawsey. Your legacy will never fade. 💛🙏🏽🏈

This past weekend I had the honor of coaching a group of 5th and 6th graders in the Picktown Classic football tournament.
We lost our first game to the Grove City Spartans 13–0 in a hard-fought battle. Every score we made seemed to get called back, and it was tough for the kids to process because they were giving everything they had. An hour later, we faced the Ashtabula Warriors and came out with a 36–0 win. The boys played their hearts out, held our opponent under 50 total yards, and had an absolute blast in the mud.
We needed the Warriors to beat the Spartans to advance, but that didn’t happen so our run ended there.

As the Commissioner of the JFLW, now in my 11th year coaching, I’ve never seen anything quite like this group. Our Westerville Elite team was made up of players from our Gold, Black, and Silver teams and I couldn’t be prouder of the outcome. The loss isn’t what these kids will remember. They’ll remember the friendships, the laughter, and the bonds they built over the past few weeks.

They’ve spent years competing against each other but this weekend, they played with each other. These kids come from five different middle schools and will soon represent three different high schools, but this weekend they all represented one name: WESTERVILLE.

Our community needs to continue embracing healthy rivalry but never at the cost of connection. Compete hard, but when the clock hits 0, remember we’re one community. Celebrate each other’s highlights, college commitments, and achievements.

Six years ago, we built a similar tournament team that won the Big Walnut Tournament and those boys, now in college, still talk about how special it was. That’s what it’s about.

These kids laughed together, blocked for each other, threw passes to each other, and celebrated every moment together. That’s the true win.
I’m proud of every player who wore the Westerville name this weekend.
Looking forward to next season and excited to see what the next group of Westerville Elite players will do.
