URGENT POST

We just can't seem to catch a break, and neither can our sweet babies.

We currently have eight cats and kittens in a foster home, and unfortunately, that home has been exposed to Panleukopenia.

Yesterday, one of the kittens in that foster home tested positive and, despite treatment efforts, sadly passed away overnight. 💔

Because Panleukopenia is extremely contagious and can be deadly, we made the decision to immediately remove the remaining seven cats and kittens from that location and place them at Mountain View Veterinary Services, where they can be safely isolated, monitored, and treated if symptoms develop.

At this time, none of the remaining seven are showing any signs of illness. Five have received two rounds of vaccinations, while two had only received one vaccine in their series.

Two of the kittens were housed in the same cage as the kitten that became sick.

Now comes the hardest part—the waiting.

For the next two weeks, we will be watching and hoping as we wait to see if any of these babies begin showing symptoms.

Panleukopenia is a devastating disease, but if caught early and treated aggressively, they do have a chance at survival. We have saved many cats and kittens from Panleukopenia over the years. Unfortunately, we have also lost many to this horrible illness.

Right now, we simply do not know which way this will go, but we are determined to give every one of these babies the best possible chance to fight and survive.

This is probably the most important fundraising post we have made in a very long time.

The cost of boarding seven cats at the vet is substantial, but we had no other safe option.

More importantly, if any of these kittens begin showing symptoms, treatment must begin immediately. We cannot wait while trying to raise funds. We have to be ready to act the moment they need medical care.

Their lives depend on it.

We are begging for help.

Whether you can donate $5, $10, $25, $100, or any amount at all, every donation helps us prepare for whatever the next two weeks may bring.

To donate directly toward their care, please call Mountain View Veterinary Services at 304-788-6602 and donate toward the Panleuk kittens.

You may also donate through our Square donation link.

We are heartbroken, scared, and exhausted. The next two weeks are going to be incredibly difficult, but we are determined to fight for every single one of these babies.

If you know Whiskers, you know we don't give up.

Please help us give them every chance possible. ❤️🐾

IMPORTANT MESSAGE‼️‼️‼️‼️We have been receiving an overwhelming number of messages asking if we can take in cats and kittens, as well as requests for help with sick and injured cats. We wanted to make this post so no one thinks we are ignoring them. We are trying our best to work through all of the messages, but unfortunately the volume has become so great that it is not always possible to respond to everyone individually. Please know we are reading them, and it breaks our hearts every time we have to say no.

At this time, Whiskers Inc. is completely closed to intake. We are beyond our capacity and cannot accept any additional cats or kittens at this time. Many of the cats currently in our care have significant medical needs, including cancer, major dental disease, chronic illnesses, and other conditions requiring ongoing veterinary treatment.

We are also facing a very large veterinary bill that must be addressed before we can take on any additional animals. As much as we want to help every cat that needs us, we simply cannot continue adding to our numbers or expenses right now.

Please know this decision is not made lightly. It absolutely breaks our hearts. Rescue is our passion, and having to tell people no is one of the hardest things we have to do. But at this point, there is simply nothing more we can take on.

The only advice we can offer is to contact local veterinarians for sick or injured cats and continue reaching out to other rescues in the area, although unfortunately many rescues are facing the same challenges.

There is much more we could say about the importance of spaying and neutering and responsible pet ownership, but that is a post for another day. We have had a very difficult week, and right now we simply do not have the energy to get into that discussion.

We will make an announcement when our situation improves and we are able to reopen intake. Until then, we sincerely apologize to everyone we cannot help.

Please trust us when we say that no one is more upset about this than we are. It truly kills us to turn away animals in need, but right now we have to focus on the cats already depending on us.

STOP TRAPPING AND RELOCATING WILDLIFE 🤬😫😭

⬇️See list below for how to humanely evict. ⬇️

It’s baby season. Local wildlife rehabbers are ALL FULL! Not just because of abandoned babies, but because of HUMANS trapping and dumping momma’s miles away and then… ohhh, there’s babies, now what?!?

This poor momma raccoon could very well die trying to make her way back to her babies. She was “relocated” miles away by someone this week for taking up residence under their mobile home. She could get hit by a car trying to get back, get in a fight with another raccoon in the territory in which she was dumped, etc.

Meanwhile, now there are abandoned babies who don’t have a mom. Often times, these babies sit in traps for days because people don’t know what to do with them while they search for a Wildlife Rehabber who has availability to help them. The problem is, this happens so frequently that everyone is full and there are no resources left to help these babies.

(While this is not cat related, it is trapping related and that is something I am very passionate about being done properly and humanely.)

Please do better. There are ways of humanely evicting a family of raccoons that doesn’t involve separating families, dumping moms, and leaving babies abandoned to starve to death.

➡️ HOW TO HUMANELY EVICT RACCOONS: ⬅️

Raccoons typically have at least 2 other dens within about a 1 mile radius of their current location. What you need to do is make their current home as unappealing as possible so that they move along on their own. They often have multiple babies to move, so this can take time. Please be patient as they won’t be able to relocate overnight. It can sometimes take up to 5 days to relocate, as they can have up to 8 babies to move.

Once they have moved out completely, you MUST IMMEDIATELY repair the point of entry, or another family will move in and you will be starting over from square one.

If you do not want to make your home attractive to these “trash pandas”, secure your trash. Don’t leave pet food sitting out. They are very opportunistic and will want to stick around if there is a food source.

🔻 OPTIONS TO ENCOURAGE HUMANE EVICTION: 🔻

DO NOT use moth balls to deter raccoons or any other wildlife. They are extremely toxic.

SCENT:
1. Spray peppermint oil around the nest, but not directly in it. Reapply every few days until they leave, then secure the area.
2. Use Fox Urine. Foxes are natural predators for raccoon kits. If a momma smells fox urine near her den, she will relocate.
3. Put rags soaked in vinegar around the nest, but not directly in it. Reapply every few days until they leave, then secure the area.
4. Sprinkle “Repels All” at the entry point, but not right near and NEVER in the nest. It is a granulated ammonia product and they will not want to stick around and smell it.

SOUND:
1. A portable radio tuned to talk radio throughout the day can be helpful. Most momma raccoons are trying to rest during the day. If her nesting area becomes noisy, she will want to relocate.
2. Ultrasonic noise pest repellant boxes positioned at the point of entry can’t help deter raccoons and encourage them to relocate.

SIGHT:
1. A bright light on constantly.
2. Amber Strobe lights positioned near the nest. Raccoons will not tolerate flashing lights for long.
