Save our Oak Savanna is a citizens organization devoted to educating and advocating for the acquisition of the properties located along Hickory Lane in Westchester, Illinois, for the sole purpose of inclusion into the Wolf Road Prairie Nature Preserve. The land in question serves as a crucial buffer for the remnant tallgrass prairie of the Nature Preserve, its protected wetlands, and its globally

critically imperiled black soil oak savanna. In addition to its vital role as a buffer, the properties located along Hickory Lane are themselves home to endangered remnant oak savannas, tallgrass prairies, and a critical hydrological intersection within the watershed. As a crucial habitat for Illinois plants, animals, and fungi which facilitate incomparable infrastructural services, we believe that the benefits of inclusion and restoration are more profitable and beneficial for Westchester than if the land were developed for residential or commercial use.

PROTECT THE PRAIRIE

An excerpt from Michael Romain’s newsletter, on the Westchester candidate forum:

“One candidate broke with consensus on Wolf Road development. Most candidates agreed that the 15 acres of land adjacent the 80-acre Wolf Road Prairie Nature Preserve and the 43-acre Hickory Lane buffer lands is either unfeasible to develop or should be off-limits to developers due to its environmental benefits. Ed Lezza even suggested that the village use the 15 acres to extend the prairie.

The one exception was Daniel Maldonado, who criticized an attempt by developers in 2021 to turn the property into luxury condos. Maldonado, a former planning and zoning commissioner, said the process may not have been done “correctly” before adding “the reality is we do need revenue” and “if there is a development that were there to come forward [my approach would be to] to take a good look at it. That way we can try to make both sides happy. But I think it’s important that we try to take advantage of the potential revenue that can come from that [while] respecting the environmental groups.”

Guess which local nature preserve has several of these keystone species in abundance? 😉

"Keystone plants are native plants critical to the food web and
necessary for many wildlife species to complete their life cycle.
Without keystone plants in the landscape, butterflies, native
bees, and birds will not thrive. 96% of our terrestrial birds
rely on insects supported by keystone plants."

Wow!

"Prairie Crossing is a nationally recognized conservation community in Grayslake, Illinois. The community was designed to combine responsible development, the preservation of open land and easy commuting by rail and is considered a national example of how to design our communities to support a better way of life. Prairie Crossing offers a wide variety of housing choices, all designed in the Midwestern Vernacular style of architecture and incorporating energy-efficient design characteristics. The land that is Prairie Crossing was purchased in 1987 by a group of neighbors who wanted to preserve open space and agricultural land. They formed a company with the goal of developing this beautiful 677 acres responsibly, with a total of only 359 single-family homes and 36 condominiums as opposed to 2,400 homes that were planned by another developer. George and Victoria Ranney, a husband and wife team, have guided the development of Prairie Crossing since its inception."
