New York Coalition for Transportation Safety - NYCTS

New York Coalition for Transportation Safety - NYCTS NYCTS provides transportation based health and safety educational services/programs in NYC and LI,NY

Initially the Coalition was a single focus group which sought to help reduce motor vehicle related trauma by increasing motor vehicle passenger safety belt use in the State of New York. In time it became apparent that many complex factors contribute to motor vehicle and pedestrian injuries. We then expanded our scope to include safety programs for pedestrians and cyclists as well as motorists, upd

Our Executive Director, Cynthia Brown, was interviewed by News 12 on June 12 regarding e-mobility safety following the recent Long Island e-bike crash that left a Westbury teenager seriously injured. As e-bikes and other micromobility devices become increasingly more common, the conversation around education, awareness, and traffic safety is more important than ever.

A 14-year-old boy suffered serious injuries Thursday afternoon after crashing an e-bike into a stopped SUV in Westbury, according to Nassau County police.

We organized a Walk Audit with parents and caregivers of a Rego Park neighborhood in order to push for a traffic light and other traffic calming measures for a busy intersection in Queens. Along with a site survey, and listening to residents, we looked at data to see some changes. For example, there were no crashes on a surrounding street prior to 2020, but crashes on every block after.

The corner of Alderton and Fleet seems quiet, but spend 20 minutes observing traffic, and it's a different story.

Drivers here are making the same deadly errors that killed children in similar situations in Astoria and Corona. In fact, in April, a reckless driver plowed across the sidewalk and into the iron fence of Baby Steps Daycare and Preschool.

We're calling on NYC DOT and Queens Community Board 6 to install a traffic light and redo the crosswalks.

Impatient drivers roll through stop signs, speed, and make dangerous calculations often cutting off pedestrians. These errors can and do injure vulnerable road users.

Join the group June 3rd at 9:30 am for a press conference with council member Wong and other community leaders to encourage a street redesign for Alderton. And please sign the petition.

Would city and towns benefit from an courtesy campaign? That's what we're pondering after reading this inciteful article about bikes in San Francisco.

It's a bit different here, as most ebikes and scooters are privately owned. However, ridership is up and will continue to climb as gas prices and infrastructure changes make it more appealing to all ages.

Meeting riders where they are, be it the street, in the app or online, is one facet, and using positive, real-time engagement to encourage behavior that keeps sidewalks clear and predictable for pedestrians is another. Lime bikes offers perks to users who model good behavior. We’re helping build a culture of accountability and making it easier for everyone to share the road safely,” said Monica DiLullo, Senior Regional Lead of Government Relations at Lime.

We've got call in to LIME and Metropolitan Transportation Authority - MTA to hear if they have any plans to deploy parking wardens here in the NYC metro area. Stand by. ( Umm, out of the way though, please. )
