It's time for Mural Monday, where each week we feature one of the new murals up around Westbrook! This mural, titled "Quilted River and Falls," is by Courtney Rog!
"This barn quilt is meant to be a representation of Westbrook's history while also illustrating the bright, colorful future that lies before them. There are three Abenaki names for bodies of water that define Westbrook: Presumpscot 'river of many rough places/falls'; Saccarappa 'falling towards the rising sun'; and Ammoncongin 'high fishing place'. I want to honor and represent these words as they were the original names of the land and water on which Westbrook's community lives today. To represent these words means to pass down this history for generations. Beyond the meanings of the quilted design, the form of a barn quilt was chosen to pay homage to the farmers of Westbrook, both current and historical, who have cared for and continue to care for Maine's land and people. I hope Westbrook's community views this mural as a representation of their home that they will admire, identify with, and pass on its meaning to generations to come."
Courtney is a local artist from Cumberland who has always been inspired by indigenous, folk, and craft arts. The deep significance and rich history of these art forms have always called to her, sparking her creativity. She enjoys making art that is deeply meaningful and purposeful in every aspect, and completed her first mural in the summer of 2025. Being able to share her art freely and openly with others filled her with such joy that she hopes to keep sharing her work with the public. Always inspired by human history and the strength and beauty of the natural world, she hopes her colorful creations are understood and beloved. She currently has a piece exhibited in the USM juried student show and a mural in Portland on the building Ocotillo occupies.
