Westbrook-Gorham Rotary is excited to participate in this annual Westbrook Public Safety event again this year. Tuesday August 4, 5-7PM in the back parking lot of St Anthony's church.

We'll be there giving away new children's books graciously provided by Altrusa International - Portland, Maine Club, along with lot's of gently used books - reading age from toddlers to teens.

Join the fun with free food and games provided by Westbrook Public Safety, meet Slugger the Seadog, then stop by our table to grab a book or two to take home for end-of-summer reading.

Since we were off last week, let's share a post from the last meeting of the 20205-2026 Rotary year. Then President Kim Corinna Carignan invited famous local author Bruce Coffin to speak to us about his work. What a thrill!!

Best selling and award winning author Bruce Robert Coffin is a retired detective sergeant from Portland (ME) PD with over 27 years in law enforcement. After retirement, he decided to pursue his passion for writing.

His first novel introduced Portland PD Detective John Byron in "Among the Shadows", published in 2016. He went on to write three more books in that series. He noted that with Portland being a small city, it seemed like it might be time to tackle a new writing project.

He co-wrote his next series The Turner & Mosley files with fellow crime writer LynDee Walker, and is now back writing a series feature Maine State Police Detective Brock Justice. The third in that series, "Dark Harbor", is due out in trade paperback this month.

You can read more about him and see his upcoming public schedule at http://www.brucerobertcoffin.com/

Honoring Veterans: This past week, we welcomed Major General Tom Spencer (Ret.) – Chairman, Board of Directors Honor Flight Maine. Tom recently retired after 37 years of service in the U.S. Army, New Hampshire Army National Guard and New York Army National Guard.

Honor Flight started in 2005 in Ohio. That group merged with other regional programs in 2007 to form a national network. Honor Flight Maine launched in 2014. Since 2014, they have flown over 1300 veterans!

Honor Flight Maine currently runs four trips a year, flying from both Portland and Bangor. Each Veteran is accompanied by a "guardian". Travel is free for Veterans. Guardians are asked to pay a nominal fee of $500 to offset costs. Each flight has a ceremony at the airport to send them off and another ceremony to welcome everyone home again. A few weeks after they return, each veteran receives a photo album from their trip.

President Jessica Pate Warren presented our check for $500 to support this amazing organization. She mentioned that her late grandfather was on one of the early flights and really appreciated the opportunity. In addition, a children's book has been donated in honor of Tom to the Baxter Memorial Library

Read more about this wonderful organization and how you can help or apply for a trip at https://www.honorflightmaine.org/ All Maine veterans qualify. Priority is given to older veterans (WWII, Korea, Vietnam eras), but Tom told us that their waiting list is shrinking and they hope to be able to open these flights to younger veterans in 2027.
