Applications for the 2027 Loran Award open in two weeks! As Canada's largest and most comprehensive undergraduate award, Loran looks beyond grades to find those who demonstrate strength of character, a deep commitment to service, and exceptional leadership potential.

Here are some tips to get organized, so you're ready to jump into the application process when the portal opens:
✅ Learn more about the Loran Award at loranscholar.ca
✅ Think of a referee (remember it can't be a friend or family member!)
✅ Reflect on your purpose, contributions, and impact in your community

That's a wrap on the 2026 Scholars' Retreat! Last weekend, the first- through fourth-year Loran Scholars made new connections, strengthened existing bonds, and built trust in one another as they came together for four days of reflection and growth.

Our annual retreat marks the transition from Loran Summer experiences to a new academic year, helping scholars head back to school feeling refreshed, grounded, and inspired to learn, lead, and give back.

This year marked our first retreat hosted on a university campus, made possible through the generous support of Queen's University. We are deeply grateful for their partnership and continued commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for our scholar community.

La retraite des boursier·ère·s 2026 est terminée! La fin de semaine dernière, des Boursier·ère·s Loran de la première à la quatrième année ont établi de nouvelles relations, renforcé des liens existants et gagné la confiance les un·e·s envers les autres en se réunissant pour quatre jours de réflexion et de croissance.

Notre retraite annuelle marque la transition entre les stages d’été Loran et une nouvelle année universitaire, afin d’aider les boursier·ère·s à reprendre les cours dans un esprit renouvelé, déterminé et inspiré à apprendre, à diriger et à redonner.

La retraite de cette année était la première à être organisée sur le campus d’une université et a été rendue possible grâce au soutien généreux de Queen's University. Nous remercions l’université de tout cœur pour son partenariat et son engagement continu à créer des occasions significatives pour notre communauté de boursier·ère·s.

Each summer, Loran Scholars work in sectors across Canada and the world. Take a look at 2024 Loran Scholar Mbarouk Nassor's experience as a Summer Intern in the Community Impact & Indigenous Programs department at the Learning Buddies Network in Vancouver.

"Who would have thought that my first time in Vancouver would include camping with the Executive Director of Learning Buddies Network, learning from Elders, harvesting cedar bark, and attending the opening of a Big House? I came expecting to work on educational projects, but I left with unforgettable experiences and meaningful relationships," Mbarouk shared. "Throughout the summer, I learned that leadership starts with listening, staying curious, and being willing to step outside your comfort zone. Looking back, I’m grateful for how both Loran and Learning Buddies Network challenged me to grow as a leader and as a person."

Chaque été, les Boursier·ère·s Loran travaillent au sein de divers secteurs au Canada et dans le monde. Découvrez l’expérience de Mbarouk Nassor, Boursier Loran 2024, à titre de stagiaire d’été pour le service d’impact communautaire et de programmes pour les Autochtones de Learning Buddies Network à Vancouver.

« Qui aurait cru que, lors de mon premier séjour à Vancouver, je camperais avec le directeur général de Learning Buddies Network, j’apprendrais auprès des aîné·e·s, je récolterais de l’écorce de cèdre et j’assisterais à l’ouverture d’une grande maison? À mon arrivée, je m’attendais à travailler sur des projets éducatifs, mais j’ai vécu des expériences inoubliables et noué d’importantes relations jusqu’à mon départ, dit Mbarouk. Au cours de l’été, j’ai appris que le leadership commence avec de l’écoute, de la curiosité constante et la volonté de sortir de notre zone de confort. En y repensant, je suis reconnaissant envers Loran et Learning Buddies Network de m’avoir mis au défi de grandir en tant que leader et en tant que personne. »

Yesterday, Loran Scholars entering their final year gathered in Tkaronto (Toronto) for the kick-off of their Fourth-Year Transition Program. During the full-day session, alumni as well as community and business leaders offered strategies for navigating the post-graduate world with curiosity, confidence, and resilience.

Thank you to Julia Whitfield, Dr. Heather Hines, Kim Martin, Aleem Punja, Hamoon Ekhtiari and Loran alumni Patrick David ('99), Joshua Wales ('04), Mikie Allan ('13), Helen Zhou ('15), and Margaux Roncière ('20) for sharing their insights.

We would like to extend our appreciation to Polar Asset Management Partners for hosting Fourth Year Transition Day; we value each opportunity to gather as a community, and their support helped make it possible.

Hier, les Boursier·ère·s Loran entamant leur dernière année se sont réuni·e·s à Tkaronto (Toronto) pour le lancement de leur programme de transition de quatrième année. Au cours de cette journée complète, d’ancien·ne·s boursier·ère·s ainsi que des leaders du secteur communautaire et du monde des affaires ont proposé des stratégies pour aborder le monde postuniversitaire avec curiosité, confiance et résilience.

Each summer, Loran Scholars work in sectors across Canada and the world. Join 2024 Gucciardi Loran Scholar Lubna Ismali as she works as an International Youth Intern at Empowerment Squared in Ghana.

"Working in Ghana has been an experience rich with learning and connection," Lubna shared. "I’ve engaged with so many community members and stakeholders, appreciated different norms, and realized just how much the world has to offer outside of my own circle. It has been crucial for me to apply my observations and background to understand the role I play in this community, the impact I hope to make during my time here, and how I will work towards my goals through a community-centred lens. By leading with curiosity and a dedication to service, I’ve found another home in Ghana, and I look forward to continuing such fulfilling work in the future."

« Travailler au Ghana a été une expérience riche en apprentissages et en nouvelles relations, déclare Lubna. J’ai interagi avec de nombreux·ses membres de la communauté et parties prenantes, découvert diverses normes et pris conscience que le monde a beaucoup à offrir à l’extérieur de mon propre entourage. Il a été essentiel pour moi de tirer parti de mes observations et de mes expériences pour comprendre le rôle que je joue dans cette communauté, la différence que j’espère faire pendant mon séjour ici et la manière dont je travaillerai à atteindre mes objectifs avec une perspective axée sur la communauté. En dirigeant avec curiosité et un engagement à venir en aide, j’ai découvert un deuxième chez-moi au Ghana et j’espère pouvoir continuer d’accomplir un travail aussi gratifiant à l’avenir. »

With experiential learning at its core, Loran Summers allows scholars to gain real-world experience, expand their professional networks, and practice navigating the job search process long before graduation. Currently, 71 scholars are lending their talents to a variety of organizations and companies across 12 provinces and territories in Canada and six other countries spanning three continents.

2023 Heaslip Loran Scholar Mariana Cueto Mendoza, 2022 Loran Scholar Luka Bordeleau, and 2023 R. Howard Webster Loran Scholar Tumi Fabiyi shared their reflections from last summer. Though they worked in different sectors and regions, they each left feeling confident about their unique paths and capable of leveraging tools to make meaningful change. Le programme des stages d’été Loran, articulé sur l’apprentissage par l’expérience, donne aux boursier·ère·s la chance d’acquérir une expérience concrète, d’élargir leur réseau professionnel et de s’entraîner à la recherche d’emploi bien avant la fin de leurs études. À l’heure actuelle, 71 de ces jeunes prêtent leurs compétences à un éventail d’organisations et d’entreprises dans 12 provinces et territoires au Canada, ainsi que dans 6 pays sur 3 continents différents.

Mariana Cueto Mendoza, Boursière Loran Heaslip 2023, Luka Bordeleau, Boursier Loran 2022 et Tumi Fabiyi, Boursière Loran R. Howard Webster 2023, nous ont fait part de leurs réflexions au sujet de leur stage de l’été dernier. Ayant œuvré dans différents secteurs et différentes régions, les trois en ont tiré une même confiance quant à leur parcours personnel et à leur capacité à mettre à profit des outils pour apporter des changements concrets. Though their work spans a multitude of sectors and disciplines, Loran alumni continue to be guided by Loran’s core values of character,
service, and leadership. Wherever their paths lead them, Loran Scholars are united by a lifelong commitment to leaving things better than they found them.

David-Martin Milot ('07) is a physician specializing in public health and preventive medicine. Having worked as a medical consultant specializing in public health and preventive medicine at the Public Health Department of the CISSS Montérégie-Centre, he has been its director since September 2025. He is also co-scientific director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for International Health Development and has been president of Doctors of the World Canada since 2020. An active citizen, he is involved in various projects related to the health of marginalized and vulnerable populations, both in Quebec and around the world.

Together, Loran alumni like David are devising creative solutions to complex problems and contributing to meaningful change.
