Thirty-five years ago, the United States led a multinational coalition to liberate Kuwait from Iraq. Every duty performed by our airmen, sailors, soldiers, coastguardsmen, and marines was important. The effort was honorable. The swift liberation was historic. The loss—even one loss—was unimaginable. While sacrifice occurred in the moment, for many it continues to be part of everyday life.

Fifteen years ago, the idea was born to create a commemorative work in our nation’s capital to honor the service and sacrifice of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. As construction now takes place in Washington, D.C., in close proximity to the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, we find ourselves wrestling with a wide range of emotions.

Hear this, veterans: Well done—and welcome home.
