Visit the Naturalist Cabin to see exceptional views of two separate wolf packs through floor-to-ceiling windows. See the wolves interact in their diverse habitats and be sure to attend the daily "Pack Chat" and "Wolf Enrichment" programs. Activities and viewing both INSIDE and OUT. We have some very exciting guests making their way to the GWDC this month!

At 2pm on June 20th, we’ll have a representative from the Montana Raptor Conservation Center give a presentation in our amphitheater. This will be a great opportunity to experience Montana’s native birds of prey with the MRCC. Enjoy seeing live raptors up close, learn about their adaptations, the rehabilitation process, and discover ways to protect them from environmental threats. Best of all, this program is suitable for all ages!

Sometimes it can be difficult to see our animals grow older and begin to show signs of age related issues. We are starting to experience that with 16 year old wolf Sura. We have found some changes in her kidney function, so with the guidance of our veterinarian, we have decided to change her over to a kidney supportive diet. Unfortunately, we are unable to put that on our wish list as it is a prescription diet. She will be receiving 4-4 ½ cans per day, so we will be in need of a large amount. If you would like to contribute to Sura’s diet fund, you can purchase Chewy gift cards off of our wish list which will allow us to purchase the food as needed. Attention folks!

As a part of our ongoing commitment to the care of the animals, the bear pond, stream, and waterfall on the habitat will be getting a complete resurfacing! Because of the scope and scale of this renovation, on Monday, June 8th, there will not be bears on habitat for the first half of the day. Once concrete work is finished (we’re hopeful that everything will be completed by 1pm) the bears will have access to the habitat again. The bear schedule will resume as normal starting Tuesday.

For those of you planning to visit us Monday June 8th (tomorrow), tickets will be at a reduced rate of $8.75/person while the bears are not on habitat. All tickets are good for two days, so if you aren’t able to stay until bears are back out on habitat, you’ll be able to see them the next day!

Do you have some old camping equipment taking up space in your closet?

Throughout the summer, as we celebrate some of our bigger holiday weekends, we will set up mock campsites for the bears to explore. The bears housed at the GWDC are non-releasable due to interactions with humans in the past, and their stories can teach how to keep other bears wild especially when it comes to food. This is an enriching and highly instructive example of what can happen when we leave food and garbage unattended, and helps us keep visitors to the area alert to the responsibilities of camping and picnicking in bear country.

If you have any gear you can donate to the cause, it’s a fun way to contribute to our mission to keep wild bears wild, and it’s enriching for the bears as well. If you have any donations of old camping gear, especially tents, please message us, or email us at [email protected].

The animal keepers, with help from our education crew, set up the first mock campsite of the season. This process allows us to educate our visitors on how to stay safe when camping in bear country. It also provides great enrichment for the bears. Bo and Coram explored the area before Coram knocked down the tent and Bo grabbed the watermelon from the picnic table. Bo also learned a good lesson in why you should be careful when opening a carbonated beverage. Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend. Stay safe this summer!

Happy World Otter Day everyone! We’re celebrating today in classic GWDC fashion: ice treats with frozen fish. Yellowstone is home to a single species of otter, the North American river otter, a semi-aquatic mammal predator found throughout the riparian zones (the transition from land to water) of the park waterways.

You can observe these wonderful animals in person in the riparian building here at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center! The otters take turns on habitat in groups of 1 or 2, with 10 minute breaks in between so the animal care staff can enrich the space throughout the day so the otters always have something new to investigate while they’re exploring their habitat.

As folks are celebrating the start of summer this weekend, it’s important to remember that we’re not the only ones looking for a quick meal!

Over Memorial Day weekend, we’ll be demonstrating the dos and don’ts of camping or picnicking out in bear country to highlight bear safety—with the help of the bears of course! On Sunday, May 24th, there will be a mock campsite set up on habitat so we can observe what might attract a bear to our camps. All of the bears at GWDC were removed from the wild due to learning to get food from human areas, so there are many things they can teach us to help prevent bears in the wild from becoming food conditioned as well.

On Memorial Day, May 25th, there will be container testing throughout the day as a part of our container testing program. This is a good opportunity to see how bears might go about getting into the coolers we use and what it means to be a bear-resistant container, so be sure to ask a Naturalist in red when the next container testing shift will be if you’re visiting with us that day!

We’ll be doing mock campsites and container testing throughout the summer, so don’t feel like you’re missing out if you won’t be here this weekend!
