UHPP on impacts of inaction by US Congress to reduce premium costs for Utah families.

Even though the government shutdown is over, the health care subsidies at the heart of it are still in limbo. Now, prices could double for millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Utahns.

Thank you for listening, Senator John Curtis! Cuts to Medicaid will ultimately have far greater cost than the short terms savings estimated by the Congressional Budget Office. Utah has a narrowly defined program that zeros in on the needs of the state. Under the House plan, Utah would sustain collateral damage from provisions seemingly designed to target other state programs. In addition to serving the needs of families, children, people living with disabilities and seniors, Utah has done amazing work to tailor Medicaid benefits to have a meaningful impact on reducing homelessness, substance use and criminal recidivism (over $50K to house an inmate in Utah per year). Work requirements, more frequent eligibility redeterminations, and potential loss of Utah's Medicaid expansion will jeopardize those efforts and negatively impact community providers and the families they are serving. We look forward to continue to be a resource to you.

Rural Utah needs Medicaid!

Excellent op-ed in the Deseret News today from Kasey Shakespear, Executive Director of Rural Health Association

05/28/2025

Medicaid eligibility is currently based primarily on income. Work reporting requirements would add working, volunteering, or education for a minimum number of hours as a Medicaid eligibility condition. Work reporting requirements do not improve employment rates. Many low wage jobs do not offer health insurance, so workers turn to medicaid to stay healthy enough to work. In addition, 92% of Medicaid enrollees nationally are already working, in school, caregivers, or are disabled. The majority of the remaining enrollees are in between jobs, or experiencing layoffs or divorce. An estimated 36 million people- or 44% of current medicaid enrollees- will lose coverage under proposed federal work reporting requirements. Medicaid work requirements do not work, and seek to address a problem that does not exist.

Read the following fact sheet by Families USA about Medicaid work reporting requirements for more information.
