New Roots in Salt Lake City

New Roots in Salt Lake City Growing Good From the Ground Up. For many refugees, accessing affordable and nutritious food is a challenge.

New Roots seeks to build a healthier community through the development of small scale, urban farms and community gardens while providing access to food literacy education to refugees in Salt Lake City. One of the primary goals of New Roots is to provide the refugee community with access to fresh, local, affordable, and culturally appropriate food. The Community Gardening Program addresses this cha

llenge by securing plots for refugees at community gardens throughout Salt Lake City. New Roots provides seeds, seedlings, and instruction on best gardening practices in Utah to help secure an abundant supply of produce for each refugee. The vegetables grown in these gardens help provide supplemental food for participants that is nutritious and easily accessible. New Roots brings gardeners together to share their agricultural skills and connect with their new home and community. New Roots of Utah is a collaboration between the International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County and the Utah Refugee Coalition.

We’re excited to share a unique opportunity to support New Roots and Spice Kitchen Incubator and KRCL during their Spring Radiothon Drive!

KRCL’s RadioActive Team, with support from New Roots and Spice Kitchen Incubator, is raising funds for community radio and once we hit that $2,000 goal, KRCL will MATCH it with in-kind on-air messaging for the IRC in Utah over the next 6 months.

That means more community voices, more storytelling, more support for farmers markets & CSA, and more impact for everyone.

Tune in tomorrow from 6-7pm on KRCL to hear from the New Roots team, a New Roots farmer, and a Spice Kitchen Entrepreneur!
