Some allegations in the criminal case (summarized by the Deseret News, 8/17/2004):

"Cervantes left his Taylorsville residence on the morning of the killing, returning to his wife later that day with blood and injuries on his face. The wife learned 'something bad had happened and that he had to leave town,' charges state.

Cervantes' car turned up in Las Vegas where he apparently offered it to someone in exchange for a lift to Mexico, charges state.

Samples from Vazquez's hand, sock and sweatshirt were determined to have blood belonging to a male, charges state.

Prosecutors have 'reason to believe he's in Mexico,' but they don't know for sure, said Salt Lake County District Attorney's spokesman Robert Stott."

On August 16, 2004, murder charges were filed against Fernando Leal Cervantes. At the time, police said they believed Cervantes had fled to Mexico. There has been no activity on the murder case since 2004 (except the occasional routine reassignment of judges and prosecutor assigned to the case; the complete court docket is shown below).

Evidence at the scene showed that Doris had fought her attacker, but Doris was only 5'3" and weighed about 120 pounds. Other evidence at the scene quickly led police to identify a suspect - Fernando Leal Cerventes. Within days of Doris's murder, police had issued a release asking for information about Cervantes.

Fernando Leal Cervantes lived a few blocks away, and was an acquaintance of Doris. Cervantes, also called Juan Fernando Leal- Cervantes, was born October 10, 1977. He did not have an extensive criminal record in Utah, but he had been arrested in March 1999 in South Salt Lake City for domestic violence. He had pled guilty and was sentenced to probation and a fine. Two months later, however, Cervantes tested positive for co***ne and ma*****na, in violation of his probation. A warrant was issued for his arrest in September 1999, but was never served.

Doris was the 67th and final homicide in Utah in 2001.  (Salt Lake Tribune, Jan. 1, 2002)

On December 25, 2001, friends went to the home of Doris Anaid Vazquez Hernandez in Taylorsville, Utah, to check on her. There, they made the horrible discovery of Doris's body in an upstairs bedroom. She had been strangled. Doris, born in 1977, had moved to Utah earlier that summer from Guadalajara, Mexico.
