Permanently closed.

Big announcement...
Not one I hoped to make for a long time but here goes...
Even though we've been doing this for quite a few years and have loved being able to rehabilitate and watch the birds in our care thrive and live out long, happy and healthy lives...this will be the last season the homestead will operate in a rescue capacity.
Myself and my husband have both had our health and personally my mobility really taken a turn these last couple years. We want to be able to give the animals in our care the best quality of life we can. And for that reason our intake is permanently closed from here on out.
I want to thank everyone who has supported, come to educational lectures and just enjoyed the shenanigans we've gotten up to over the years

Been a little bit since I've been able to update. We've had a lot of health issues/scares/losses between immediate family and close family the last few months but everyone is hanging in there. Had a couple chilly days but everyone is enjoying the sunshine today before we see what the next weather front is going to bring. Still have a couple yahoos molting but it seems like all the residents have decided to finish in a timely manner this year.

You heard that right 31 eggs! That's the most we've ever had under one puddle raptor. She is pretty much impossible to break when she gets in the mood for babies and for the sake of her health it's just better to let her sit when she wants to sit. Took her down to nine eggs. Give it a week and see how many of them are viable. Generally less than half will hatch thus so many. Thankfully Ari is a very good mama.
I know most people don't hope for roos but I would love to get one out of Ding before he goes. He's five years old now and his line has been some of the best boys we've ever had on the homestead. Last couple years have all been hens and I'd love for him to get to pass on everything he's learned from his sire.

So some updates.
We have four with Miss T just in time for Ari to go broody. Moved her and the babies into a bigger brooder so they have room to get their zoomies out and she can start showing them how to scratch and pick for food outside of their feeders

Finally got Toffee out of her hidey-hole with her clutch. She's only been sitting for a couple days but that didn't stop her from sitting on 16 eggs!
Took a few of them away from her and got her inside to her own personal brooder so we can keep an eye on everyone. She was not happy about moving her nest but it's better for her and the potential chicks in the long run. Now the waiting game to see how many are going to hatch.

Doing a quick check in this morning after the weather yesterday. All things told we got out pretty lucky. Lots of really loud thunder and a couple moments of pretty strong wind. Hope everyone else is doing ok.
Going to move our broody girl inside to her own personal kennel after breakfast since she looks like she's in it for the long haul. I'll post some picks up later once we get her set up

Not too much going on at the homestead recently other then tucking in for broody season. I dont think KB quite gets the idea and poor Toffee just wants her eggs 😆

And four hours later we have officially gotten the big coop dewinterized and fresh bedding all put in. Took care of the small coop yesterday so we are good to go for spring and the warmer temps. Just in time for the girls to go broody.
So far we have one in Romans group who I've noticed started plucking belly feathers and hiding eggs and two in Dings group.
Still got some attached run areas to clean and freshen up but that may wait until this storm front we have coming in tomorrow passes.
They're talking pretty good wind gusts and there's no point putting fresh if the wind pulls tarps and soaks it all.
Now to put everything away and give the dog a bath since she decided to help today and is looking a little like a porcupine from rolling I straw lol

Buddy has it been a year so far with the weather. Just put a few more bags of bedding in everyone's coops so they have plenty to cozy down in together if they don't feel like cuddling on their roosting bars. Probably going to close the runs for a day or two since we're looking at a -10 to 0 standard temp tomorrow just for everyone's comfort.
The new girls cleared their quarantine and are out with Roman. Been a couple weeks that we've had to daily put them to bed but we'll get there.
Hope everyone out there is staying warm and healthy. We're still fighting colds here. Anyone else ready for spring?

Going to be super cold tonight so we went ahead and closed everyone up early so nesting areas have a chance to get good and cozy before dark.
Second fecals have been done on the newest girls. Very minor worm shed casings in a couple droppings. Not too surprising. Going to treat them for that and keep them in quarantine for at least three more weeks.
Have been able to determine that the one I was concerned about with the runny nose like to dunk almost her entire face into the water dish like a duck. Going to have to keep an eye on that one. Still going to be a bit for the respiratory tests come back but Im pretty sure that's what we're looking at there.
Stay safe in this chilly weather everyone.

These three girls were just dumped earlier today. I suppose best after all the snow had dropped as opposed to before but still.
You can hear the happy chitters. Being somewhere warm with full bellies. They are in quarantine until their labs clear.
They do have some frostbite damage in their toes and combs and the gal in the back appears to have gotten into a minor scuffle recently though with what I can't tell. Shes got some feather shaft damage and some shallow scratches which we've treated already.
Little bit of discharge from their noses as well so definitely testing for respiratory issues to be safe. It could very well be from something simple but better safe than sorry.

The household got mostly over that horrible stomach bug just in time for the crazy weather to hit. We were fortunately able to add a couple extra layers on insulation around each of the coops. The birds are sitting at a base 40 degrees even at night and are getting checked on every hour. No one is fluffed up from the cold, everyone is foraging in the extra hay we put down and staying cozy. Hope everyone is staying safe and warm where you're at.
