This is what a team picture looked like back in the late 1920's...That's the entire team!
And you know what - this edition of your Springfield Indians, won the championship of the Canadian-American Hockey League in 1928.
I'm sure everyone recognizes "Sparky" Vail, "Clucker" Whyte, "Deacon" Waite, "Patsy" Callighen, "Yip" Foster, "Doc" Kent, and their diminutive goalkeeper, Abby Cox (5' 6". 140 lbs.).
Also pictured, front row, left, is "Buddy" Maracle, an actual member of the Mohawk tribe. Buddy Maracle played six seasons in Springfield and was the first full-blooded, First Nations hockey player in the National Hockey League.
This is as cool as it gets...we've located Buddy Maracle's descendants (Thanks, Rob), and they've made the trip from St. Catharines, Ontario to be with us this weekend!

Very happy to announce that Thunderbirds captain, and veteran of 401 NHL games, Chris Wagner, will be joining us at Hockeyday on Saturday, July 25th!
Chris will be joined by another 20-something Springfield Hockey Alumni, for what is going to be the best day of the summer for those missing Hockey.

Here's one you've never seen before...
This is one of the 1971 Springfield Kings team pictures taken that wasn't used for a myriad of reasons. Billy Smith has his eyes closed, Jean Potvin and Merlin Jenner aren't looking at the camera, and the best one, #18 Ed Hoekstra is giving the "rabbit ears" to John Healey. It's just one of the 10,000+ negatives in the Heritage Society collection.
Lots of history, lots of fun.
We'll be celebrating 100 years of Hockey History in Springfield on Saturday, July 25th in the Better Living Center.
