Ask Governor Lamont to delay any permit decision for the Brookfield Compressor Station.

A time sensitive request:

Call and email Governor Lamont about the Brookfield Compressor Station comment response and permit. DEEP is expected to respond on Thursday, June 18th, and we need to generate calls and emails to the office before then asking him to further delay the process. A template email/call is below.

Subject: Stop the Brookfield Compressor Station Expansion

Body:

Hi Governor Lamont,

My name is [your name] and I am from [your town]. I am [calling/writing] to ask that you delay the comment response and permit for the Brookfield Compressor Station expansion until after there is a new permanent commissioner at the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

This decision will have longstanding impacts on Brookfield and Brookfield’s children and should be carefully considered by a future commissioner. This is particularly important because of the level of public opposition, the denial of an adjudicatory hearing, and well documented health and climate impacts, which are inconsistent with state air quality goals and policy.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

[your name]

[your town]

UPDATE: An update on the proposed expansion of the Brookfield gas pipeline compressor station.

Background: This proposed expansion will add two additional methane gas burning turbines, doubling theBrookfield Compressor Station. This will increase greenhouse gas emissions in Connecticut by over 80,000 metric tons of CO2e emissions per year, and will pollute the local air with substantial NOx emissions increase of at least 24.9 tons per year. On January 8, DEEP held a virtual public hearing regarding its tentative decision to permit the proposed expansion. DEEP received over 500 written and in-person comments. As part of the process, DEEP must respond to the comments before finalizing a decision on the permits.

DEEP had set its comment response date for May 15 (yesterday). But, due to the volume and the substance of the comments, DEEP has now extended its comment response until June 18. Thank you to all who commented, you have made a difference!

TAKE ACTION: Advocates have continued to pressure Governor Lamont and DEEP to oppose this expansion, while we await DEEP’s final decision on the air permit. This included residents sending over 50 certified letters to Governor Lamont’s office, asking him to oppose this decision and stand with Brookfield residents. A meeting took place between Governor Lamont and First Selectman Steve Dunn. On Monday, activists protested at DEEP headquarters. Here's a couple ways you can add your voice to express your opposition to this expansion:

Join Sierra Club on May 30 at 8:30 am for a press conference in Brookfield as part of a bike ride across Connecticut against proposed gas expansion in our state.

The legislative session will be ending on May 6, less than two weeks away. The resolution to put the CT Environmental Rights Amendment on the ballot, SJ 37, which passed in committee with strong language this year, is waiting for action from both the Senate and the House. Let your legislators know that you want them to be strong supporters, using this action link. And then follow up with them -- they are up for election this fall. Do they support your right to a clean and healthy environment and a safe climate? Are they leading on this important issue right now, during the legislative session, when it matters most?

Use this action alert your legislators to sponsor it, so that we can pass it through the CT General Assembly this year and send it to a vote of the people. Also, help spread the word by sharing this press release, Facebook, and Instagram post.

On Saturday April 18th, Ridgefield's Action Committee for the Environment held its 2nd annual buy back for gas powered lawn equipment.

Ridgefield residents were able to turn over their gas powered equipment in exchange for a $50 coupon to Lowe's. The coupon was limited to the purchase of any battery operated tool, battery or battery charger. In 2 hours, a truckload of equipment was purchased and is now being recycled/properly disposed. All of the equipment removed from service had been powered by 2 cycle engines which are super-polluting machines. 2 cycle engines combust only @ 70% of the gas and oil used, and emit carcinogens, volatile organic compounds, green house gas emissions and lots of noise. Many local jurisdictions and some States have banned or restricted these engines. However, only 4 towns have taken legislative action, Norwalk, Westport, Greenwich and Stamford.

All over Connecticut homes are developing ice dams. These arise when heat from the home melts the snow which then freezes as it hits the edge of the house. As the snow melt continues the water has no where to go and backs up under the shingles. The photo below is an example.

If you have an ice dam this video from “This Old House” explains how to deal with it. Hint - be proactive!

Once you have dealt with the current problem - it is time to prevent it from ever happening again by insulating your home. Fortunately we have efficiency programs that can cover most and sometimes all of the cost. Check this link to learn more!

CCAG has been going after property & casualty insurers for a number of years for their role in the climate crisis. Now we have an opportunity to debate the industry up close and personal and introduce the "Insuring Connecticut's Resiliency Policy." 🌎💵

The Connecticut General Assembly's Environment Committee will be holding an informational hearing on this policy this Thursday, January 22nd at 9am ET at the Legislative Office Building room .

This policy would create a crucial revenue stream from a 5% surcharge placed on insurance policies of any existing or new fossil fuel infrastructures in Connecticut. These funds would be dedicated to climate resiliency projects in the state such as public awareness campaigns, flood risk data dissemination, construction of climate resilient infrastructure, and more.

The insurance industry is actively organizing against this bill. We need to make sure we out-organize them, and have as many people as possible in the room for the forum.

Please join CCAG this Thursday at 9am at the Legislative Office Building to support the Insuring CT's resiliency policy!

Please spread the word and invite folks - the more people, the more power we have!

We have climate finance experts who will be testifying in favor of this policy including Amy Chester of Rebuild By Design, Sharon Lewis and CT based Environmental Justice activist and former insurance professional, Charles Slidders of Center for International Environmental Law and Carly Fabian of Public Citizen.

This forum is shaping up to be a big climate fight, and it makes a world of difference if you are in the room to show your support.
