E-bike bans and restrictive laws are not just aimed at electric bicycles, they set a dangerous precedent for all cyclists. Targeting e-bikes was the easiest first step because they are newer, faster, and easier to single out, but once governments and motorists accept the idea that certain bicycles do not belong on roads or public spaces, it becomes easier to expand those restrictions to traditional bikes as well. Many drivers already resist sharing the road and often fail to respect how vulnerable cyclists and pedestrians are compared to people inside multi-ton vehicles. Instead of improving infrastructure, enforcing reckless driving laws, or creating safer shared streets, policymakers often choose to restrict cyclists because they are the smaller and less politically powerful group. When any form of cycling is pushed out of public spaces, it normalizes the idea that roads exist only for cars, a mindset that threatens the rights, safety, and freedom of every cyclist, regardless of whether they ride with pedals alone or with electric assist.
