Native Resource Preservation

Native Resource Preservation Unfortunately, history has left our scenery altered and some of land’s great resources struggling to push through a bright canopy.

From the roots up we are grown from the philosophy of keeping our landscape free of unnatural disturbances and releasing the soils to power the native plants they were evolved to nourish. Through self-conscious footsteps and a nostalgic need for manual labor in the elements, it is our goal that with a LIGHT ON THE LAND philosophy we can work to Preserve our Native Resources.

When the days aren’t quite long enough but conditions are just right and within the safety window, there’s something special about a prescribed burn wrapping up after sunset. 🔥

These targeted burns are important ecological tools used for clearing out invasive brush and kickstarting healthy new growth. 🌱

A huge thank you to our incredible crew and partners for making the Spring 2026 burn season both safe and successful! See you back out there this fall. 🍂

If you drive by and see smoke, don’t worry—it’s all part of the plan!

After cutting invasive buckthorn, we stack and burn the material to clear the site. When the piles are fully extinguished, we spread the ashes and reseed the area with a native species mix. As the native seeds get established, it’s hard to tell we were even there!

Restoration doesn’t stop at cutting. We’ll be back for follow up treatments to ensure the native species thrive. To achieve this, we’ll spray and cut any buckthorn that’s grown over the next few seasons. It's a multi-year commitment to bringing this first back to its natural state.

Healthy forests don’t happen by accident, they happen through intention.

We’re out at a youth camp restoring this hardwood forest by removing invasive buckthorn from the understory.

We’ve been opening up dense patches to give native species room to thrive. There’s a mix of ways we approach this cutting. In flat areas, we’ll use a forestry mower that has a specialized cutting that shreds thick buckthorn in minutes. On slopes, we switch to hand crews to prevent erosion and minimize soil disturbance, especially given the current wet conditions.

After clearing, we’ll seed the area with native rye and other native grasses and forbs to outcompete buckthorn regrowth and promote long term forest health.

Prairie restorations don’t pause when cold weather arrives. Winter is actually an ideal time to remove invasive and problem trees, setting the stage for native species to thrive. By clearing these threats, we support pollinators and wildlife, restore the land to its natural balance, and ensure these spaces can be enjoyed the way they were meant to be, no matter the season.

Not every stump requires herbicide to stop regrowth, many tree species simply won’t resprout once cut. In these cases, we can efficiently remove large numbers of problem trees using equipment like skid steers or forestry mowers, knowing they won’t return the following season.

At Native Resource Preservation, we help bring nature back to life. We restore prairies, woodlands, streams, and more on both private and public lands.

Ecological restoration is the process of helping degraded or damaged ecosystems recover, allowing them to once again support thriving native plants, wildlife, and natural processes. It’s not a one-time fix. It’s an ongoing journey that grows and evolves with the landscape, and we're there everystep of the way.
