We are a science and fact-based policymaking organization that strives to share only information. To that end, in 2023 we stopped using Twitter, now known as X, as a social media platform. The decision was in response to the spread of misinformation, lack of accountability, and dissolution of the Trust and Safety Council.

For the same reason, we are eliminating Facebook and Instagram and starting February 10th, will only post on LinkedIn. We remain committed to partaking in meaningful, honest dialogue and ensuring we do not inadvertently support the spread of misinformation by being selective in our use of social media platforms.

On January 8th, a motion by Supervisor Lindsey Horvath on the Regulation of Household Hazardous Waste ( ) through Extended Producer Responsibility ( ) was posted and will be heard during today's Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting where the Board will consider and vote on the motion.

The motion directs the Director of Public Works, in collaboration with other County departments, to assess the feasibility of creating an ordinance for an EPR program. This program would ensure safe, sustainable, and producer-funded collection of HHW and Electronic Waste not covered by existing state laws. Additionally, the motion instructs the Chief Executive Officer to advocate for statewide EPR legislation for HHW.

L.A. County is not alone in spending many millions of dollars to manage HHW without any help or funding from the producers who profit from selling the products, with more dangerous and expensive to manage products coming to market monthly.

We send our best wishes to everyone in Los Angeles where they are experiencing tremendous fires. When buildings full of toxic products burn, they are releasing dangerous chemicals into the air. This is another reason to minimize our reliance on toxic products and make sure they are not unnecessarily stored, illegally dumped into trash, recycling or on the side of the road to become a public health problem.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2023 National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries revealed a concerning rise in the fatality rate for refuse and recyclable materials collectors. With 41 fatalities, the occupation is now the 4th deadliest in the United States, up from 7th in 2021 and 2022.

Businesses, governments, and rate payers see the increased cost of insurance coverage for these facilities, the equipment, and their operators. This underscores the need to continuously improve safety to protect our workers by making investments in safer infrastructure, automated systems, and technology. However, decisions in product design and how especially hazardous products are managed can also play a critical role in increasing safety and reducing costs, hence our focus on Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) EPR in 2025.

EPR has been proven to work at not only encouraging product redesign, but ensuring the public has free and convenient options for proper management of products at End Of Life (EOL). In 2025, NSAC is partnering with key environmental legislative champions who who will be authoring marine flare and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) EPR bills in California to ensure they are properly managed and supporting EPR for Electric Vehicle Batteries and solar panels.

The Sunnyvale Fire Department believes a lithium ion battery likely ignited inside the compacted load. The fire was substantial enough to also damage the tractors. This is an example of the devastating effects improperly disposed batteries can create.”
