Tanya is one of our founding crew members, and ROWsist wouldn't be ROWsist without her.

She brings a regal elegance to life and to her rowing. You'll often find her in stroke seat, reminding us not to rush the recovery, and her long pinch keeps us from missing water. She's also frequently seated in front of or behind our newest rowers, where her kindness and gentle encouragement are felt and heard in the boat.

Tanya has her own cancer journey, but her commitment to women's and children's health runs far deeper. As an epidemiologist and midwife, she has spent a lifetime advocating for positive change in the world. Links to a few of her papers are in our bio.

When asked how women can take care of themselves, Tanya said:

Whether she's putting people at ease or leading with grace and strength, Tanya makes this crew stronger. We are so grateful she's part of ours. 💜🚣‍♀️

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 🎀 Time to schedule your mammograms!

Many ROWsisters are breast cancer survivors. Between us, we've had triple-negative, ER+, PR+, and HER2+ breast cancers, BRCA mutations, and no genetic predisposition at all.
We've had lumpectomies, mastectomies, lymph node removal, and risk-reducing surgeries (our BRCA friends got extra fun with oophorectomies and hysterectomies). We've had radiation, chemotherapy, wound clinics, and endocrine therapy (extra hot flashes, anyone?). Some of us had DIEP flap reconstruction or implants, and some weren't able to have reconstruction at all.

REGARDLESS OF OUR JOURNEYS, WE ALL AGREE: EARLY DETECTION MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE. GET YOUR MAMMOGRAMS! 💗

Head of the Port: home water, full hearts. 💙

Yesterday ROWsist took to the water at our home port for Head of the Port, and it was everything we hoped for: a gorgeous (if a little warm) day, calm water, and the freedom to focus on technique, rhythm, and pushing ourselves to our limits. Something cancer survivors know a thing or two about.

Our ROWsisters also went out with masters crews: Shari in the bow of a mixed 8+, and Talli and Addrienne powering the middle of a novice women's 8+ from seats 6 and 5.

And our teammates lined the shore to cheer for every one of us. You were heard, and you were felt. 🙌

For some, this was a first race. For others, it was one race in more than a decade of racing. Whatever the experience, there's nothing like the electricity of race day. It reminds us to squeeze every drop of joy out of every moment.

We are here. We are alive. We will make the most of every stroke. And we loved every second of being on the water together, one boat, giving it everything we had!

Every Rowsister has met her cancer journey with grace, resilience, and grit. We did what we had to do to survive — some of us are still doing it, still in treatment, still fighting. And somehow, in the middle of all that, we found each other.

Rowsist became our silver lining — a place where we don't have to explain anything because we already know. We know what it took. Our bodies know. We know we'll never quite be who we were before. But together, on the water, none of that weighs us down. It's a magical feeling when we're all rowing as one — in that moment, there's nothing else. Just the next stroke.

Thank you, RCRC. 💗

On Sunday, RCRC members took to the Montlake Cut in Seattle for the 27th Annual Pink Ribbon Row, leaving breast cancer in our wake. Our crew rowed for the wife of a teammate who was just diagnosed and for all breast cancer survivors.

Many of our ROWsisters are breast cancer survivors, so this cause is near and dear to our hearts. Seeing so many of you show up in pink, at sunrise, to row for her and everyone facing this fight means more than we can say.

Thank you for your strength, your support, and for showing up for our community. We love you.

To all cancer survivors: ROWsist is here for you, too. Come out and join us when you're ready. 💗

Summer's winding down (though the triple-digit heat last week clearly didn't get the memo 🥵). But the shorter days mean something good — golden evening rows, sunsets over the water, and nothing to think about but the next stroke. Just us, the boat, and the water.

She's funny. She's sassy. She's bossy! She's strong, caring, supportive, and always shows up.

Meet Addrienne - the sister we all wish we had. Three years with ROWsist, and she's up for anything - need an erging buddy, a mahjong party coordinator, or a last minute seat filled in a race boat, she's your girl. She's our go-to sub, our emergency cox, the only rower we've ever seen hot-swap a seat mid-scrimmage. A crossfit devotee. A crazy-shorts-in-any-weather icon. And like all of our rowsisters, someone who has faced real health battles with nothing but resilience and grit.

We are so grateful she is part of this crew! 💜🚣‍♀️ 💜

Friends don't let friends erg alone. 🚣‍♀️

Whether we're training for head races, chasing half marathon meters, building stamina, hitting split goals, or logging UT2s — this team ergs together. We may not always enjoy it (let's be honest), but we show up for each other every time.

That's the ROWsist difference.

There is no ROWsist without Shari Lowen. 🌅

This week, we're celebrating Shari's very well-deserved Plank membership to RCRC — a lifetime membership, no dues, ever — alongside ROWsist's almost-4th anniversary. 🎉

Four years ago, Shari believed a community of cancer survivors could find strength, focus, and joy on the water — and she built it, one rower at a time. As founder, team captain, tireless promoter, RCRC master rower, and ambassador to survivor rowing clubs beyond our own, she has poured herself into making sure every person who walks onto our dock feels welcome, capable, and seen.

Most of us wouldn't have joined without her. All of us are stronger because of her.

Thank you to Karen Satchwell for nominating Shari for this honor, and to Arthur Ericsson, whose support of ROWsist and of Shari — including the short film "Breathing Deeply" — has helped share her story with the world.

Shari, you are encouragement and compassion in human form. Thank you for believing in all of us before we believed in ourselves — and for carrying that same belief to survivor rowing communities everywhere.
