It is with heartfelt sadness that we join our community in mourning the passing of former West Sacramento Police Chief Barry Kalar. Chief Kalar is survived by his sons, Seth and Matthew; his granddaughter, Mariah; and five great-grandchildren.

Chief Kalar dedicated his life to serving others. As the first Chief of Police for the West Sacramento Police Department, he helped build a department founded on professionalism, integrity, and a deep commitment to the community. His service also extended into education as an Adjunct Professor of Administration of Justice at Sacramento City College, where he mentored and inspired future generations of public servants.

As a dedicated Rotarian and community leader, Barry believed in the power of service, education, and collaboration. His leadership touched countless lives, and his commitment to making West Sacramento a safer and stronger community will have a lasting impact. As members of the Washington Unified School District Board of Education, we are especially grateful for Chief Kalar's belief in education and his investment in young people. His example reminds us of the importance of mentorship, civic engagement, and working together to build a brighter future for our students and our community.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Chief Kalar's family, friends, former colleagues, students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May they find comfort in the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind. Chief Barry Kalar will be remembered with gratitude, respect, and appreciation for a life dedicated to service.

A public memorial service honoring Chief Kalar's life will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Jackrabbit Brewing Company, 1323 Terminal Street, West Sacramento, CA 95691. Family, friends, colleagues, and community members are invited to attend as we celebrate his remarkable life and legacy.

District 5180 Conference

What an incredible weekend at the District 5180 Conference in Lake Tahoe.

Being surrounded by so many passionate, service-driven people is something you just can’t fully put into words — you have to experience it.

From powerful speakers…
To inspiring stories of impact…
To connecting with Rotarians from across the district…

It was a reminder of how much good is happening when people come together with a purpose.

We’re not just part of a club —
We’re part of a movement that’s changing lives locally and around the world.

Proud to represent the Rotary Club of West Sacramento and be part of District 5180.

Let’s keep showing up.
Let’s keep giving back.
Let’s keep making a difference.

💙 Service Above Self

🔄 Rotary Rollback: Unite for Good

Our recent Rotary meeting was one of those reminders of why this organization matters — not just to us, but to the next generation.

We opened the way we always do — with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Four-Way Test, and a powerful Maya Angelou quote on courage and virtue. Add in a little “Good Day Sunshine” for the Song of the Day, and you could already feel the tone: hopeful, grounded, forward-looking.

But the heart of the meeting? Our students.

---

🎓 Scholarships & Service

Our Rotary Foundation continues to change lives. This year, we are on track to award approximately $63,300–$64,000 in scholarships, supporting students from River City High School, Delta High School, and Yolo High School.

We read a thank-you note from past recipient Paulina Mendoza, sharing how Rotary’s support impacted her education and path forward. Those moments hit differently — because that’s the real return on investment.

We’re currently looking for volunteers to help interview applicants this spring (mid-March to mid-April). If you’ve ever wondered how you can directly shape a student’s future — this is it.

🗣 Rotary Speech Contest: “Unite for Good”

The highlight of the meeting was our local-level Rotary Speech Contest — the first step in District 5180’s three-level competition.

Theme: Unite for Good

And these students delivered.

We heard stories about: • A football team rallying around their coach during a family crisis and organizing a blood drive.
• A “one band, one sound” analogy reminding us that unity requires balance and every role matters.
• A young skater finding belonging after losing a friendship — discovering that unity heals.
• A courageous reflection from a young gay adult about choosing compassion over division and standing united despite differences.

These weren’t just speeches.

They were reminders that unity is a choice — made daily.
