The opioid overdose crisis continues to impact individuals, families, and communities across the country. As we recognize Overdose Awareness Month and prepare for International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, it’s an important time to learn more about overdose prevention, harm reduction, and the actions that can save lives.

Read this week’s CASAT OnDemand blog post, “Understanding the Opioid Overdose Crisis: Prevention, Harm Reduction, and National Action,” to learn more about the crisis and what we can do to support prevention and reduce the impact of overdose.

Substance use disorder, which includes Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), is a primary chronic disease similar to diabetes and hypertension, and is not a moral failure or weakness. Pregnancy is an ideal window of opportunity for the treatment of OUD that will reduce maternal, obstetric, fetal, and infant morbidity and mortality. To date, the single best strategy we have to identify and help those that want assistance is adding SBIRT into the clinical setting.

A great day of learning, connecting, and a little fun! đź’™

Our CASAT team recently came together for Staff Development Day. It was a chance to step away from our usual day-to-day responsibilities, connect with colleagues, learn more about one another, and strengthen collaboration across our teams and projects.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to spend time together and celebrate the people who make CASAT what it is.

A big thank you to everyone who participated and to our wonderful planning committee for putting together such a thoughtful and enjoyable day!

Rates of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in pregnant and postpartum persons have increased, with some shocking statistics from recent studies:
📊 Over 40% of pregnant persons enrolled in Medicaid receive a prescription for opioids.
⚠️ Drug-related deaths contribute to pregnancy-associated deaths, with substance use being a preventable, causal, or correlating factor in maternal mortality.
🩺 Several obstetrical complications have been associated with opioid use in pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia, miscarriage, premature delivery, fetal growth restriction, and fetal death.
👶 OUD can lead to Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome or Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NAS/NOWS)

Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to delivering early intervention for individuals with risky substance/opioid use and provides a timely referral to more intensive substance/opioid use disorder treatment.
