Sounds Downtown is BACK. 🎶

What an incredible turnout for our first concert of the season at The Back Lot! The Downtown House Band set the tone for the evening, and Drifters Mile was pure bluegrass joy.

Thank you to Community First Banking Company for sponsoring this free community concert series, thanks to The Back Lot for hosting (what a great space!), and to everyone who came out to enjoy live music, connect with friends, and spend the evening downtown.

Next up: Kayla Ray takes the stage on July 16! If this first show was any indication, we’re in for a great season.

On this Juneteenth, as we honor freedom, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of Black dreams in America, we’re proud to share the inspiration behind the new Lincoln School Project street mural by Garrett Melby Art.

Inspired by Langston Hughes’ “A Dream Deferred,” this piece reimagines what it means for dreams to endure. At its core are two faces—one looking toward the past and one toward the future—each carrying vibrant visions that move, grow, and meet at the Lincoln School. It’s a powerful reminder that while dreams have faced obstacles, they have never been lost—they continue to evolve, expand, and carry forward through generations.

The Lincoln School has long stood as a cornerstone of Black history in West Plains—a place where education, community, and determination created pathways forward, even in the face of inequity. This mural honors that legacy, lifting up the truth that Black dreams have always persisted—reshaping, redefining, and finding their way forward.

As we celebrate Juneteenth and 100 years of the Lincoln School, may we remember: when a community protects and uplifts its shared history, dreams don’t fade—they move, they grow, and they meet us in the future.

When we set out to expand our downtown flowers, we realized we had outgrown the watering tank we used to wheel up and down Washington Avenue. Thankfully, we have incredible partners who show up when it counts!

Mega Motorsports stepped in with an ATV that holds THREE times the watering capacity, and the City of West Plains outfitted it with a tank and everything we need to safely navigate and store the vehicle downtown.

Huge shoutout to our friends at the West Plains Chamber of Commerce for helping make the connection with Mega Motor Sports—we’re so grateful for a community that works together to make downtown beautiful!

Kick off summer with an evening of live music you won’t want to miss!

Join us for the first free concert in our Sounds Downtown series, sponsored by Community First Banking Company. The Downtown House Band opens at 6 PM, followed by Drifters Mile bringing their signature bluegrass sound to the stage at The Back Lot on Thursday, June 18th.

Make a night of it—grab dinner downtown, bring a lawn chair, and pack your favorite drinks. See you there!

Civic Spruce was a success!

A huge thank you to the Sunrise Rotary - West Plains Missouri, Missouri State-West Plains Grizzly Softball, and everyone who came out to lend a hand. From Girl Scouts to firefighters, and so many community members in between, it was inspiring to see people of all ages working together to make downtown shine.

We’re grateful for every volunteer who gave their time, energy, and heart to this effort. West Plains is better because of you!
