Because domestic and sexual violence occur at anytime, and the trauma of abuse and r**e are pervasive, our emergency shelter and crisis hotline advocates provide client-defined, trauma-informed care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We are here to provide support and resources for a positive change in people’s lives! Call our hotline anytime if you are being abused - 800.611.5853.

You’d be surprised what a “normal day” in a domestic violence shelter looks like. 💜

Shelter life is unpredictable—crises can pop up out of nowhere, laughter can break out in the hallway, and community gets built in the middle of it all. Through every twist, staff and volunteers “make it happen,” doing the steady, behind-the-scenes work that helps people breathe again.

And healing isn’t a straight line. Some survivors leave and come back more than once—but returning isn’t failure. It can be the next step toward safety, support, and a life that feels like theirs again.

Shelter works because hope and safety are rebuilt together—by residents, staff, volunteers, and community supporters showing up, day after day. 🫶

What do you wish more people understood about what shelters really do—and how communities can help?

This past month, we released our 2025 Needs Assessment, a report of the requests for domestic violence and/or sexual assault services from survivors that went unmet. Many of these unmet requests for services stem from limited funding, resulting in agencies having to scale back services or hiring to stay within budget.

Transportation was listed as the service type agencies across Missouri are struggling to provide the most. According to the needs assessment, 22% of unmet requests were for transportation services.

While agencies reiterate that “all populations are largely unserved and underserved,” survivors in rural communities face an additional hurdle: lack of accessible, affordable transportation. Many communities do not have public transportation. If public transportation is available, it’s not accessible 24 hours a day and seven days a week, and resources aren’t available to help survivors pay for rides.

One agency states, "Many victims do not have vehicles, which makes getting away from their abuser more difficult. We are a rural community, and public transportation is limited. There have been several attempts to address the issue, but funding and availability of employees to provide the service have limited the effectiveness of it."
