Public Statement from Inner City Innovators:

We are deeply saddened by the recent loss of a young person in our community. Our hearts are with the families, friends, young people, and community members affected by this tragedy.

Out of respect for the privacy and dignity of everyone involved, we will not release names, personal information, or details surrounding this loss. We ask the public to avoid speculation and refrain from sharing unverified or identifying information.

Our team is working quietly through trusted relationships to support those directly affected and help connect them with appropriate emotional, practical, and professional resources.

As specific needs are confirmed and families provide permission, we will share responsible ways for the community to help.

For now, we ask everyone to keep the families in prayer and remain ready to respond with compassion, generosity, and respect.

This loss is also a reminder to check on the young people in our lives, listen without judgment, and take signs of emotional distress seriously. If you or someone you know is struggling or experiencing thoughts of su***de, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. If there is immediate danger, call 911.

We will continue standing with our young people and families—not only in moments of crisis, but throughout the healing process.

At Inner City Innovators, we develop young leaders, support families, mediate conflict, and work to prevent violence.

These efforts are connected because young people don’t experience life in separate categories. Supporting their growth means recognizing the full picture: their goals, relationships, families, challenges, and communities.

This Free & Alive Friday, we’re celebrating Ahkeam and Jordan—two young Hope Dealers turning their ideas into action.

Together, they created Mix, Measure, Mentor, an innovative project that uses baking to help elementary students strengthen their math and literacy skills.

Their idea brings education, creativity, and mentorship together—giving younger students an engaging way to learn.

Ahkeam and Jordan developed this vision while navigating challenges that could have easily discouraged them. Instead, they used their experiences, leadership, and creativity to build something that can benefit other young people.

Their vision earned them $9,500 in start-up funding as finalists in the 2026 Philanthropy Tank.

This is what can happen when young people are seen for their potential, trusted with responsibility, and given opportunities to lead.

Yesterday, we shared one of our core principles: trust is built by showing up consistently.

Today, we’re sharing what that looks like in practice.

From May 1 through June 30, Inner City Innovators mentors recorded more than 420 interactions with mentees.

That included:

• 240 mentee check-ins
• 78 one-on-one mentoring sessions
• 81 small-group mentoring interactions
• 21 interactions with guardians and caseworkers

These aren’t simply numbers on a report.

Every interaction represents a conversation, a follow-up, a relationship strengthened, or another opportunity to remind a young person that someone is still in their corner.

Impact isn’t always one dramatic moment. Often, it is the result of showing up again and again.

That is relentless engagement in action.

Happy Birthday to one of our incredible Hope Dealers, Shacoya! 🎉

Being a great mom is already a full-time calling, but Shacoya doesn’t stop with her own children. She also chooses to invest her time, energy, and heart into the lives of young people throughout our community, showing them the same care, encouragement, and consistency that every young person deserves.

That kind of selflessness doesn’t go unnoticed. Through her commitment, she’s helping build stronger young people, stronger families, and a stronger community—one relationship at a time.

Thank you for all you do, both at home and as a Hope Dealer. We hope this next year brings you the same joy and encouragement that you so freely give to others.

Trust isn’t built by showing up once. It’s built by showing up consistently.

Many young people have learned to be careful about who they trust. Some have experienced people, programs, or systems that showed up briefly and then disappeared.

At Inner City Innovators, we call our approach **Relentless Engagement**.

This principle isn’t only for mentors and youth workers. It applies to parents, caregivers, teachers, coaches, and anyone committed to supporting a young person.

Don’t mistake a teenager’s distance for a lack of need.

They may not always answer your questions. They may not immediately accept your help. They may act like your presence doesn’t matter.

Keep showing up anyway.

Listen without turning every conversation into a lecture.   Follow up when you say you will.  
Keep the small promises.  
Stay curious instead of assuming.  
Give them room without disappearing.  
Don’t give up because progress takes longer than expected.

Young people pay attention to patterns. Consistency shows them that your care is real.

Trust may not come immediately—and that’s okay.

Earn it one conversation at a time.  
One commitment kept at a time.  
One consistent relationship at a time.

That is relentless engagement.

Hope is delivered through people who choose to show up.

Meet Norman Austin, Programs Director at Inner City Innovators.

Norman was born in Pahokee and raised right here in West Palm Beach, in the Pleasant City and Tamarind communities. His journey took him from competing in basketball, football, and track to earning a Track & Field scholarship at Troy University, where he graduated with a degree in Sport and Fitness Management.

Today, Norman brings that same discipline, leadership, and commitment back to the community that helped shape him.

As Programs Director, he helps turn ICI’s mission into action—supporting the programs, people, and relationships that allow us to keep showing up for young people across Palm Beach County.

This work is personal. It is local. And it is led by people who believe our young people deserve the opportunity to live Free & Alive Beyond 25.
