HIGHWAY DOG ATHENA HAS BEEN ADOPTED. 🤍

They said she survived on the highways of Miami for almost 8 months before I heard about her that day in June and immediately drove down to get her, of course, with the help of a few friends. 

Now look at her.

You would never know this dog lived without a human for a day in her life. She has a dad, a brother, a couch and a home where she is very, very loved.

From surviving Miami highways to sleeping on her dad’s chest. This is why we rescue. 🥹

Today is National Senior Citizens Day and I swear I did not plan this…

I was already planning on making this post today because somehow Rescue Dog Network has FIVE senior dogs who need homes. Astro, Luna, Leo, Mikah and as of today…Boom.

And this is no way for their lives to end.

We can spoil them, pay dog sitters, pay boarding, buy them whatever they need and make sure they are safe but none of that replaces having a person. They need someone to give them what might be their first and last pup cup, take them on what might be their first and last trip to the beach, let them sleep in a human bed and wake up next to somebody who loves them.

I don’t know if they have 5 years left or 2 years or 6 months. None of us do. I just know I don’t want whatever time they have left to be spent waiting for a home. Even just a foster home.

Astro, Luna and Leo have been with us and all still need foster or forever homes, Mikah needs a forever home and then this week we were asked to take Boom who needs a foster or adopter.

Boom is almost 11 years old. His mom has had him since 8 weeks but recently had a baby and could no longer safely and responsibly care for both of them in her home. And please don’t drag her through the mud because that isn’t what this post is about. Our dog daycare told us about him, and let us know he had already been at boarding for an extended time and they were looking for a responsible rehoming option. I told his parents we were full and explained exactly what we would need in order for me to responsibly say yes to another dog right now. She offered to cover all of his medical AND his boarding at Posh Pet while we find him a foster or forever home. She did exactly what she said she would do for him, so we said yes.

And of course he is the freaking sweetest, so friendly and just wants love.

So apparently National Senior Citizens Day found us at the perfect time. What sucks even more is that I had planned to fill out grant information for a senior Dog Rescue Grant, but I got too busy saving Athena the highway Dog that day and missed my chance. Issues of a procrastinator Dog Rescuer.

Please share Astro, Luna, Leo, Mikah and Boom. Even if you can’t adopt maybe somebody on your friends list has an empty couch and a soft spot for an old dog.

They don’t need perfect, they just want a person and they deserve it.

When we found Muffin wandering the streets of Homestead/Miami she was shaved, covered in flea allergy dermatitis and severely anemic from hookworms. We spent the last few months getting her healthy and her anemia is FINALLY better but now it’s time to deal with the other thing we haven’t shared yet…heartworm treatment.

She’s safe, happy and loved and has come so far from the dog we picked up off the streets, now we just have to get her through this. She is in a foster-to-adopt home and this is one of her last hurdles before officially locking in her forever family and us feeling comfortable finalizing the adoption.

Would anyone like to sponsor Muffin’s heartworm treatment? ❤️ One person, a business, or a few people who want to split it, anything helps our little rescue take on another very expensive treatment. It’s about $1,000. Estimate in comments.

We got her off the streets, got her through the anemia, now let’s get these damn worms out of her heart and make room for all these kids who love her and want to love her for her forever.

Everyone keeps sending me Atlas and asking me to save him and trust me, I see him.

He is only 3 years old, at Miami-Dade Animal Services and his deadline is TOMORROW 8/21.

Someone has incredibly offered $1,000 toward his rescue. That is by check through a trust that takes weeks to come in. I am willing to put Rescue Dog Network behind him, but I NEED A FOSTER.

I don’t think everyone realizes that RDN is basically me. I have some amazing people who help transport, foster, donate and jump in when I need them, but I don’t have a facility or staff waiting for another dog. I run a foster based rescue while working full time and my bandwidth and bank account only go so far.

Atlas has a fever of unknown origin, a skin issue and he is terrified, but has shown NO signs of aggression. His fever could get worse once he’s out and $1,000 can disappear very quickly at an emergency hospital, so I also need someone willing to financially back him if we end up at VEG and put a card on our account for his care.

One more thing I REALLY need the community’s help with…Facebook no longer shows me where our posts are shared. If you share this and someone pledges money on YOUR post, I literally cannot see it or follow up with them. Please screenshot pledges and send them to me or tag Rescue Dog Network. This has become a huge problem for rescue and Facebook really needs to change it.

I don’t need hundreds of people telling me to save him.

I need one person to foster him and a few people willing to help me save him.

🚨 10 DAYS TO FIND SOCKS A HOME. 🚨

And I really need South Florida to help me with this one.

This is Socks. He is approximately 80 pounds of gentle-giant loverboy.

His foster situation unexpectedly has to end in 10 days because of a code enforcement issue with the property, nothing Socks did. He has been safe, loved and completely settled there, and now we’re racing the clock to keep him from having to go into boarding.

Here’s the dog you’re sharing:

🤎 Does NOT need to be crated all day
🤎 Professional couch potato
🤎 Loves having a backyard to wander around and occasionally frolic like the giant baby he is but not required

Socks isn’t asking for much, give him a house, a couch, some humans to love and preferably a yard, and this man is HAPPY.

He would do best as your one and only dog, and no cats for our big guy. He is so lazy he just doesn’t like being bothered with other dogs.

We saved Socks when he was facing euthanasia at Miami-Dade Animal Services. His name was Albus back then. We had a foster. We did not save him just to watch him end up without somewhere to go now.

We have 10 days.

Even if you cannot adopt him, PLEASE SHARE HIM especially outside of the rescue community. Send him to the family with kids who has been talking about getting a dog. Send him to your neighbor with the fenced yard. Send him to your coworker. Post him in your neighborhood group. Post him in some car bro group with dudes who want big dogs.

Same dog a little over ONE WEEK apart 🥹

A little over a week ago a friend called me about a terrified puppy found in Boynton Beach. She had wood embedded in her head and a cord wrapped tightly around her neck.

But the thing is, my dog rescue is small. REALLY small. Like most of our money actually comes from my personal, very limited bank account or my own Facebook friends. My mental bandwidth is even smaller lately. I knew taking on another dog was probably the last thing I needed to do.

But then I saw her. Cowered in a little ball. I had to physically lift her out of the car because she was so terrified of whatever humans had done to her so far in her short little life.

I couldn’t let her spend another minute scared if I had the ability to change that. And that’s my superpower. I do somehow have the ability to change that. Some higher power he/she/they/them/dog/cat whatever you believe in, something out there gave me the energy and ability and passion to get to where I am today, with the support of you amazing people, and gave me the drive and work ethic to know when I can say “one more”.

So Aspen came with me. Us. You. To our Rescue Dog Network.❤️

Straight to the vet for bloodwork, f***l testing, wound treatment, vaccines. A safe place to sleep. A paid dogsitter while we figured out her next move. And now a foster home with one of our trainers who is teaching her all the puppy basics to find her the PERFECT home. Hopefully a home better than her little heart could ever imagine. Hopefully. (Any takers?).

The scared little girl curled against the wall a week ago is now the goofy, big-eyed love bug smiling in these photos.

Yesterday her stray hold at the shelter officially ended. Of course the POS who had her before, whoever that was, never came forward for her.

Aspen is officially a Rescue Dog Network dog!!

She is safe. She is healthy. She is learning. She is dog friendly. She loves people. Vaccinated, microchipped. And most importantly she knows what it feels like to be loved. She did manage to go into heat so we are waiting for her spay appointment as soon as that’s over! 

So yeah, sometimes rescue isn’t some massive operation with unlimited resources. 

Sometimes it’s a phone call from Audre. A dog request the day before you go out of town. One person like me (responsibly) saying, “Okay. I’ll figure it out.” And you people saying “okay I trust you”.

And somehow, we always do figure it out. Because I believe in me, you believe in me, and we all believe in her.

Now we just need to find the family who gets to love this face forever, as much as we already do. And hopefully some donors to help us recuperate from those financial losses so we can keep doing this again and again!

🚨 WE NEED TO RAISE $1,000 🚨

Okay Rescue Dog Network family… I need you

We currently have a $1,000 balance at our veterinarian, and I rarely do that. It’s not the way we like to run the rescue. That being said, before we can comfortably say YES to the next dog who needs us, we need to get this bill DOWN. This is on top of our $700 a week in boarding.

This is the part of rescue nobody really sees.

The emergency visits. Bloodwork. Medications. Vaccines. Sick dogs. Senior dogs. Dogs that come to us after someone else decided their medical problems were no longer their responsibility.

So I want to try something:

🐾 SUNDAY FUNDAY ADOPTABLE #5: ALBUS! 🧦

Also known as SOCKS and once you look at those giant white feet the nickname makes a lot of sense.

Albus is a whopping 85 pounds of absolute gentle giant.

And when I say gentle… this guy LOVES people, especially children. ❤️

His ideal day is….

🛋️ Be a complete couch potato
👧 Hang out with his tiny human best friends
🌳 Wander into the backyard
🦋 Frolic around chasing butterflies
🛋️ Return to couch

He doesn’t really care about other dogs... He’s mostly too lazy to be bothered. Personally, I recommend a single dog home.

Cats however? Suddenly Albus discovers cardio. Absolutely NO cats for this guy. His prey drive is alive and well, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise! He’s true to his breed which we think is some kind of black mouth cur.

He’s also an incredibly easy house dog. He can be left home outside of a crate and does NOT need to be crated.

And somehow this sweet, goofy, kid-loving 85-pound couch ornament was sitting at Miami-Dade Animal Services scheduled to be euthanized.

We couldn’t find a good reason for his life to end. So we didn’t let it.

We saved Albus. ❤️

Now we need someone else to finish what we started and give this giant baby the forever home he deserved all along.
