A night of community, civic engagement, and service. 🗳️⚖️

The FMCBA Voting Rights, Restoration & Judicial Candidate Forum was a testament to what happens when we bring people together with a shared purpose: to educate, empower, and ensure our community has the information it needs to make its voice heard.

With dozens of community members in attendance, we filled the space with meaningful conversations about voting rights, rights restoration for returning citizens, the issues impacting our communities based on developing voting laws, and the importance of an informed electorate.

We are incredibly grateful to our featured speakers Representative Jervonte Edmonds and Senator Mack Bernard, the judicial candidates, our collaborating and participating organizations (NAACP, JDI, FRRC, PBACDL, ACLU, PBC League of Women Voters), our Event Title Sponsor edrickbarneslaw, board members, volunteers, and every person who showed up ready to listen, learn, ask questions, and engage.

We are grateful for the strong start to President Freddie Menard’s year of service, grounded in the first pillar of this year’s leadership: Seeds of Power - Educate. Empower. Mobilize. This pillar reflects FMCBA’s commitment to serving as a catalyst for meaningful change by educating our community about the power we possess, empowering individuals to use that power, and mobilizing our collective voice to create lasting impact. Among the most fundamental and sacred of those powers is the right to vote.

FMCBA President Freddie Menard, Esq. recently joined a Haitian community podcast to discuss voting rights, important voter updates, and why civic participation cannot begin and end with the general election.

During the conversation, President Menard emphasized the importance of understanding primary elections, knowing what and who will appear on the ballot, and ensuring our communities have the information they need to participate meaningfully in every stage of the electoral process.

This conversation continues next week at FMCBA’s Voting Rights, Restoration & Judicial Candidate Forum, where community members can learn more about voting rights, restoration of voting eligibility, important election updates, and hear directly from candidates seeking to serve our community.

Today marks the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most consequential civil rights laws in our nation’s history.

The Voting Rights Act prohibited racial discrimination in voting and helped dismantle barriers such as literacy tests and other practices that had prevented countless of Black and Brown Americans from exercising one of our most fundamental constitutional rights. The Act also dramatically expanded access to the ballot for historically marginalized communities. Its legacy reminds us that civic participation is both a right and a responsibility.

As part of our commitment to educating and empowering our community, FMCBA encourages every eligible voter to stay informed, understand their rights, and make their voice heard. Take your first or next step by joining us for our voter rights for room taking place next week! Attendance is free with registration using the link in our bio.
