A fun-filled day of youth sports was transformed into unthinkable tragedy when a 34-year-old mom drove a truck through a youth soccer game in Wichita on Saturday afternoon, killing two people – including a 6-year-old – and injuring 11 others.

It’s something that no youth sports community should ever have to endure. And it’s a harsh reminder of the importance of recreation leaders having Emergency Action Plans (EAP) in place.

Check out our latest blog on how vital EAPs are: https://www.nays.org/every-second-matters

A huge thank you to the Jupiter Elite Volleyball Club for helping us out Sunday afternoon with an officiating training video we are doing in partnership with the Georgia Recreation and Park Association. The video will feature information for beginning volleyball officials on positioning, hand signals, making calls, communicating with players and coaches, and more. A big thanks also to the West Jupiter Recreation Center for allowing us to shoot the video at their facility.

One of the most challenging aspects of coaching kids is helping them learn to move on from mistakes.

Amanda Jones, founder of Armor Mental Performance, shares powerful insights on ways coaches can keep kids competing with a next-play mentality in a piece she wrote for us.

Among the tips she shares is this gem: following a miscue have players make eye contact with a teammate, give a quick high five or communicate to the squad what is coming next.

"Sometimes the fastest way out of your own head is to get useful to somebody else," she says.

For the past 20 years children in Ypsilanti Township in Michigan have been reaping the benefits of our Start Smart Sports Development Program.

And their parents have, too.

“We have been offering Start Smart since 2006 and over that time it has become a valued part of our youth sports offerings and an important introduction to recreation for many local families,” says Mason Kaiser, Recreation Services Coordinator at Ypsilanti Township.

Adds Gary Stafford, Sports Assistant for the township: “Start Smart provides young children with a positive first experience in sports by focusing on skill development, confidence, and family involvement rather than competition.”
