Happy World Snake Day!
Here's a list of medication that only exists due to research with snake venom. Thank a snake today for saving lives all over the globe, maybe even a loved one close to you! Share this post today to spread the word about these amazing animals ❤️

Blood Pressure and Heart Failure Medications

Captopril (Capoten): Developed as the very first venom-derived drug. It is modeled after a peptide in the venom of the Brazilian pit viper (Bothrops jararaca). It acts as an ACE inhibitor to relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure.

Enalapril (Vasotec): Developed as a follow-up to captopril using components from the same Brazilian pit viper venom. It works similarly to improve cardiovascular health while optimizing the molecular structure for patient safety.

Antiplatelet and Blood Clot Prevention Medications

Eptifibatide (Integrilin): An antiplatelet medication modeled after a protein disintegrin found in the venom of the southeastern pygmy rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius barbouri). It prevents blood clots during acute coronary events or heart attacks.

Tirofiban (Aggrastat): An antiplatelet drug based on a substance isolated from the venom of the saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus). It prevents blood platelets from sticking together to avoid major cardiac complications.

Coagulation and Stroke Management Medications

Batroxobin (Defibrase / Reptilase): A serine protease isolated directly from the venom of lancehead vipers (Bothrops moojeni and Bothrops atrox). It converts fibrinogen into fibrin to influence blood clotting. It is widely used internationally to treat conditions like acute ischemic stroke, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism.

Hemocoagulase: A blood-clotting agent derived from the venom of Bothrops atrox. It is utilized primarily in surgical settings—such as abdominal and plastic surgeries—to effectively minimize and control bleeding.

Alligatoridae - The family includes alligators and caimans

Crocodylidae - The family includes all true crocodiles

Gavialidae - The family includes only two extant crocodilians distinguished by elongated, narrow snouts
