NEW PUBLICATION ALERT: Critical habitats for sharks and rays in Asia remain largely unprotected ๐Ÿฆˆ๐Ÿ“„

A landmark new study assessing Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRAs) across the Bay of Bengal, Southeast Asia, and the Northwest Pacific has just been published โ€” and the findings are a wake-up call for marine conservation in the region.

Key findings:
๐Ÿฆˆ 122 ISRAs identified, spanning ~1 million kmยฒ (~3% of the region)
โš ๏ธ 121 species represented โ€” 76% of which are threatened
๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Indonesia leads with 40 ISRAs (~72% of total ISRA coverage). This overlaps with three of MMF Indonesia's key sites: The Nusa Penida MPA, Komodo National Park, and the Derawan Islands MPA
๐Ÿ“Š Citizen science was the primary method used to delineate ISRAs
๐Ÿšจ Only 5.4% of the ISRA area overlaps with MPAs, and just 2.8% with no-take zones

While critical habitats are being identified, their protection is lagging far behind. Deepwater and freshwater species remain underrepresented, eight jurisdictions lack ISRAs entirely due to data gaps, and conservation efforts are not yet aligned with where biodiversity needs them most.

ISRAs offer a powerful, evidence-based framework to guide spatial planning, prioritise management, and support the recovery of Asia's imperilled sharks, rays, and chimaeras. Now we need the protection to match.

NEW PUBLICATION ALERT: Habitat Use, Residency, and Connectivity of Bull Sharks in the Bazaruto Seascape, Mozambique ๐Ÿฆˆ๐Ÿ“„

Bull sharks are more connected than we ever imagined. Using passive acoustic telemetry, our team tracked bull sharks across the Bazaruto Seascape in Mozambique, revealing a species that is both a year-round resident and a wide-ranging traveller throughout the Western Indian Ocean.

Key findings:
๐Ÿฆˆ High year-round residency, with core habitat concentrated along seaward reef systems and inshore areas off the San Sebastian Peninsula
๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ 82% of core habitat overlaps with existing MPAs โ€” but important areas extend beyond protected boundaries
๐ŸŒ Strong connectivity with aggregation sites along the southeast African coast
๐Ÿšข Occasional long-distance movements across the Mozambique Channel to Madagascar and beyond
๐Ÿ“… Seasonal transient sharks passing through primarily between May and November

The Bazaruto Seascape is not just a local hotspot โ€” it's a critical connectivity node in a much larger regional movement network. Protecting bull sharks means protecting the pathways that connect entire ecosystems.

These findings make a clear case for conservation strategies that combine local spatial protection with broader regional and transboundary management frameworks. ๐Ÿ™

WELCOME TO THE TEAM! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ™Œ

We have some exciting new faces joining the MMF team โ€” across two continents!

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ Manon โ€” Volunteer, Nusa Lembongan: A graphic designer whose love for the ocean grew from her first dive in 2021 into a deep passion for conservation. Manon will be supporting our manta and turtle ID projects and bringing her creative eye to our communications! ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽจ

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ Izzie โ€” Master's Student Intern, Nusa Lembongan: Izzie volunteered with us in 2025 and is back to conduct her Master's thesis research. Having done her Divemaster right here in Nusa Penida, she already knows the MPA like the back of her hand! ๐ŸŽ“

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Christian Hancock โ€” Guitarfish Intern, Florida Manta Project: Christian is helping us establish a guitarfish photo-ID protocol using AI-driven software, a tool that could allow us to track individuals without tagging and identify them from citizen science reports. ๐Ÿฆˆ

HAPPY WORLD OCEAN DAY! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’™

This World Ocean Day, we protect what gives us hope. MMF is proud to call not one, but three Mission Blue Hope Spots home ๐Ÿ

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Inhambane Province, Mozambique โ€” where our Mozambique team leads on-the-ground conservation efforts for manta rays, whale sharks, dugongs, and the coastal communities who depend on these waters

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ Nusa Penida, Indonesia โ€” a 20,057-hectare Marine Protected Area in the heart of the Coral Triangle, renowned for its stunning reefs and home to multiple migratory species, including the reef manta rays and ocean sunfish

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Coastal Southeast Florida, USA โ€” home to critically endangered staghorn and elkhorn corals, migratory pelagic sharks and Atlantic manta rays, vital sea turtle nesting sites, and spawning grounds for vulnerable fish species

We are working to protect these extraordinary places โ€” for the species that depend on them, the communities that call them home, and the generations yet to come.

NUSA PENIDA'S EXTRAORDINARY SECRETS! ๐ŸŽค๐ŸŒŠ

Last month, we had the most wonderful evening hosting a public talk on "10 Things That Make Nusa Penida Extraordinary" at Scuba Center Asia โ€” and what better occasion than their 10th Anniversary to celebrate this very special place we all call home! ๐ŸŽ‰

Rather than focusing solely on the iconic megafauna, we took the audience on a full journey through the ecosystem:
๐ŸŒŠ Geographic location & upwelling conditions
๐Ÿฆ  Plankton
๐Ÿฆˆ Manta rays
๐ŸŸ Ocean sunfish
๐Ÿ” All the way up to the top of the food chain
๐Ÿ›๏ธ And closing with what matters most: the management of Nusa Penida's Marine Protected Area, and what it takes to safeguard it for generations to come

With around 50 attendees, the room was buzzing with curiosity, great questions, Virtual Reality experiences, and a free buffet to top it all off! ๐Ÿ™Œโœจ

This was also our first time exploring this format, and we loved every minute of it. Here's to many more evenings like this ahead! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฅ‚

A huge thank you to for hosting us and for 10 incredible years of diving and ocean passion. ๐Ÿคฟ

TURTLE NESTING SEASON HAS ARRIVED IN FLORIDA! ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ’š

Every summer, sea turtles flock to South Florida to mate and lay their eggs on our warm Atlantic beaches โ€” and the season is officially ramping up!

In 2025, over 50,000 nests were documented across 27 core Florida nesting beaches. ๐Ÿฅš

On our most recent aerial survey, we spotted over 150 individual turtles โ€” 17 of which were observed engaged in mating behavior!

Three species were represented: green turtles (Chelonia mydas), loggerheads (Caretta caretta), and leatherbacks (Dermochelys coriacea) ๐Ÿข

But we feel like we're just getting started...

๐Ÿ‘€ Our aerial survey record currently stands at 631 sea turtles. Could this be the year we break it? Watch this space! ๐Ÿ™Œ

BUILDING REGIONAL CAPACITY IN BRUV SCIENCE ๐ŸŽ“๐ŸŒŠ

Earlier this year, MMF's Simรฃo Sande travelled to Makhanda, South Africa, to attend the South African BRUVs Network Meeting hosted by The South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, and came back with a serious skills upgrade!

The workshop delivered specialist training across the full BRUVs pipeline:
๐ŸŽฅ Stereo-BRUVs calibration
๐Ÿ“ Fish length measurement techniques
๐Ÿ“‹ Standardised BRUVs workflows & quality control procedures
๐Ÿค– Application of AI in BRUVs data processing and reef fisheries monitoring

Beyond the technical training, the meeting was a fantastic opportunity to connect with researchers and institutions across southern Africa working on marine biodiversity monitoring and fisheries science โ€” strengthening the kind of regional collaboration that makes conservation science more powerful.

This investment in capacity will directly support MMF's ongoing BRUVs monitoring and data quality workflows in Mozambique. Proud of you, Simรฃo! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Florida has a secretโ€ฆ and it lives just beneath the surface. ๐ŸŸ

South Florida is home to one of the only known urban manta ray nurseries in the world. Young mantas rely on these waters for food, shelter, and safety during one of the most vulnerable stages of their lives โ€” yet most people cruising right over them have no idea.

Slowing down in known manta zones and staying alert near the surface is one of the simplest things the boating community can do to protect them. Scientists at Marine Megafauna Foundation have identified this nursery. Now it's up to all of us to make sure these animals have a fighting chance.

MAY FIELDWORK: FULL OF SURPRISES ๐ŸŒŠ

May was truly a month of extraordinary encounters out on the water at Nusa Penida, and the ocean did not disappoint!

๐ŸŸ On the manta front, we were treated to something truly special: a sighting of Anna Helen, a massive pregnant female with a very visible bump, a beautiful reminder of the life cycle unfolding right beneath the surface! In the same dive, we also witnessed 3 mantas engaged in a mating train, further confirming just how vital Manta Point is: not only as a cleaning station for mature individuals, but as an active site for mating rituals โฃ๏ธ

๐Ÿ  But the surprises didn't stop there! Our team also encountered a Giant Sunfish (Mola alexandrini) and an Indo-Pacific Wobbegong (Orectolobus leptolineatus), both spotted in Crystal Bay.

๐Ÿฆˆ And thanks to our incredible citizen science network and dive centre partners, we received reports of a Bottlenose Wedgefish (Rhynchobatus australiae) at Manta Point and a Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus) sighting on the North side of Penida!

Every one of these sightings is a powerful reminder of just how special Nusa Penida is as a marine habitat. We're now working on building a photo ID database for these megafauna species, so we can begin tracking whether the same individuals are returning over time.

The ocean keeps giving, and we keep listening. ๐ŸŒŠ

๐Ÿ“ธ Thanks to our amazing partners , , and for helping make these sightings possible!
